Whats the best substrate?

^^^ Dont have a nano, think I will just use sand, with some supplements, think they should be fine.

If you do sand...

If you do sand you need to keep in mind plants arent fond of sand as a substrate. Also you have to mix up the sand every once and a while or it will build up pockets of gas that will be poisonous to your fish. If you get the 3m product try to get the "T" grade it is larger than regular sand and should do better with plants. As far as the plants issue you can keep the plants in those plastic baskets then they would have the nutrients they need. As far as the stiring issue you can also get some "MTS" Malaysian Trumpet snails. With enough of them and if your sand is not too deep they can do a good job of stiring your gravel and they dont eat plants. Good Luck!! PS if you find somone selling MTS please let me know I am trying to get some too...lol

Haha I am on a waiting list for those, also got me a kohoolie loach I will throw in there to dig, went ahead and got eh sand!

that sounds like something i would do.. it doesnt break up and float all over the water column?

Its really minimal, especially if you use planting tongs. But another benefit, is that you wont ever really need to fertilize the substrate, since its loaded naturally.

Plant roots also help aerate soil, so they discourage anaerobic conditions needed for Hydrogen sulfide production. I've use sand as a topper many times, and have never disturbed the sand/substrate after planting, besides an occasional root tab.

Oh.. the aquatic gravel for pond is essentially turface
