When did I get so picky?

It seems the more I learn ( and I know I am not an expert) the harder it is for me to find fish and plants that suit me at my LFS.

Yes I have purchased and continue to purchase items from my local LFS but for the last few months it has just seemed to be supplies. I look at the fish each time I go but No new species, No bristle noses, No new L# fishes , just No other interesting stuff to me. Don't even get me started on plants!

Am I insane? Are you guys finding it as hard as I am to feed your addiction ...errr I mean add to your tanks as I am?

I find myself more and more having to buy "online" but shipping is painful sometimes.

Have you asked your LFS to order? My place only had hornwort but they ordered Water Sprite (lol I asked for Wisteria but close enough right? ;) ) and L. Repens for me... they also ordered my Gold Barbs :)

Edit: Save on shipping, support a local business, easy returns if the store has a good return policy. What's to lose?

I have a good relationship with my lfs owner, to the point where I can go onto his wholesaler's website, see what their stock is for that week and then tell the lfs owner what I want to buy. :) I still have to buy the harder-to-find, oddball nano fish and inverts from online sites like msjinkzd.com , but am able to get some cool, lesser-known fish from my lfs through his willingness to help me.
If I were you, I'd let the store owner know that you're interested in purchasing livestock that falls outside of the bread and butter staples and I'm sure they'll be all ears!

I'm the same way, I go into a store with 40-50 tanks and I look at all of them and go is this all you have? The more you learn the more you discover what you truly like.

I can agree with this. I'm very picky when it comes to buying fish but then again, when your tanks are already at their capacity, not much you can do. But..I do enjoy walking through the store and seeing if there is anything different for a change.

Plants on the other hand would be such a welcomed sight to see. At the one "real" pet store in town, I'm lucky to see Anacharis in the store. At least PS has a few other varieties (not much mind you). I always so tempted to ask the owner if he would allow me to set up a "display" tank with plants. Just to see what interest that would garner for him. I'd be willing to bet that other hobbysts would see it and then be like "hmmm...I want those too" ;o)

plants near me are ridiculous and dieing. fish... well there's a great variety of COMMON FISH... argh. i thought i had a good repoire with one store and things seemed great... then they said they'd need $1000 or so to order RED CHERRY SHRIMP. i told them they were crazy and the only reason i return to that store any more is because they're the only local place to get healthy feeder rats for my red tail boa.

the funny thing is a couple of these stores are stores people come from several states away to shop at and owners as well as employees belong to or sponsor the local fish clubs. A-freaking-MAZING!!!!!

i can only assume that returning newbs who kill fish weekly and their salty sections are what's keeping them in business.
