I agree black stone and black background will make your fish pop.

As for paint, you can use Krylon Fusion spray paint. I think it is $5 a can at Wal-Mart. It is aquarium safe as I have used it to paint items inside my tank before.

Thanks guys, I found my camera and will get better photos shortly. I'll be going with the black paint, just have to figure out how to paint it while so close to the wall, lol. Another thing I'll be working on is a black limestone cave. The way you see it building up in the right corner, I'll be stacking it higher to try and make it look like a drop off. With the extra black limestone I have, I'm going to go for an ant farm effect. From inside the aquarium, it will be about a 4 inch oval opening. From the outside right end against the glass, you be able to see the complete inside of the tank. I'll put some slate inside in hopes that a spawning couple with hatch'em there. Possibly make it easier for them to defend their fry. I'll use some silicon obviously to secure the rocks together. Hopefully it comes out okay, if not, I have enough rocks to just scrap it...we'll see.

Here's the begining to my half view cave:

As I completed the black limestone cave, I'll be increasing the amount of the slope from right to left. The white limestone will remain at the level it's at now. In the center, when completed with both sides, I'll be buying more of the crushed limestone and slightly overlapping the bigger black and white limestone to blend it in better. I'm trying to simulate a drop-off from the right. We'll see if the idea is just in my head or if I could make it look somewhat decent.

The water is still a bit cloudy, I apologize. The cave will be about 12 inches wide and maybe 7 inches deep. I was really surprised to see how well the bigger limestone rocks vacuum with the python hose. The siphoning pressure shoots straight through the rocks and I can see the uneaten Dainichi(sp?) pellets/drops come straight up.

The styrofoam is just there for the support during the building process. I'll be letting the silicon cure for about a week(do you think that is ample time?). Looking forward to see how this will look completed.

I'll be watching this thread - I love the DIY stuff (my two favorite things are PVC and silicone I). Lookin good so far.

I'm also deating on whether or not to paint the back of the aquarium with black latex paint.

PAINT it Black IMO - this is a standard for every freshwater tank I set up!
