Where do I drill the 40B

No doubt Ace. Not gonna argue with the looks of a CTC (especially a clear one). Can't see if the 3rd pipe is in use or not but if the down 90's are set at the right height there shouldn't be much room for a snail to get under them. Anyway completely agree on the looks but if its done with a custom acrylic box it looks and works great.

Getting back to Benson who doesn't want to do a beananimal anyway :). Did you look at the video? The 2 pipe system is called a herbie drain and incorporates the same concept but only 2 pipes. It isn't really that complicated and also pretty much dead silent. If you want something less complex but works go with the external durso like Ace uses or one of the glass holes kits. The external durso is gonna be a better option IMO. Quieter and and easier to fine tune than the GH.

Ace, where did you get your overflow box? Is that a GH box with your own piping out the back? Also how do you like the squid? Has it held up well?

That is an old pic when I first set it up, both my SCWDs are in the trash now.. neither lasted a year before breaking. They are junk.. an OM-2 way or 4 way is the correct way to do that stuff if one wanted to in my opinion. Actually, the back plumbing, other than the top T on the overflow, has all been replaced with a much simpler method (Y and hoses).

The overflow box was made by the tank Mfg to my specs, I just told them I wanted it 6"x4"x2"deep that covered the hole that was drilled for a 1-1/2" bulkhead and that is what I got. My LFS kept telling me it wouldn't work, a box that small, but I kept challenging them to give me a scientific reason why since the hole size out the back is the deciding factor on how much flow can go through, not the size of the box, since the box will always be bigger than the hole. I was right... never had a problem with the size of the box.

Glad it works well for you. Its a nice low profile box. Definitely not an eye sore.

Congrats on the new tank Benson. I think you'll like the breeder.

Thanks guys for all of your help!!! I admire your expertise and your love for the hobby...

I have a glass store that will drill the tank for me. 20 bucks a hole... worth it to have experts doing the drilling...

Question??? what do you think of having two return holes and one drain hole???

I like the idea of multiple returns for a little better flow distribution. 2 drains are always better than one as well but understand that many don't want to incorprate more piping especially on smaller tanks. Its just safer to have 2 drains but a good 1.5" drain would take quite a bit of material or a big snail to clog.

Please don't be bean animal.. crap.. just looked at the link.. it is. I hate those things personally. Every person who I have seen do it, it looks like crap, takes up way to much room, and is unneeded IMO. It does work, but is way to big and ugly for me and other easier/smaller methods work just as well, ie. I have never had an overflow with my external durso, simple 1-1/2" bulkhead, T on the back of the tank, cap on the top with a hole drilled, works flawless and the overflow box is tiny in the tank.

Never had an over flow? Your second picture clearly shows an skimmer/overflow.

I think Ace meant he has never had a physical overflow (like a pipe clogging and water spilling over the top of the tank onto the floor :)).
