Where do I drill the 40B

^ agreed.
There was no water in that picture so it could not possibly show an overflow.

Personally I think they should be referred to as 'drainage' since it does cause some mild confusion calling them 'overflows'. But 'overflow' is already basically part of the language of this hobby so we are stuck with a good 'overflow' and a (extremely) bad 'overflow' and some mild confusion if both are referred to in the same thread.

What? Are you saying an overflow is made of water so since there is no water an overflow can not exist? Do yourself a favor and google "aquarium overflow".

Maybe a bad play on words there. :)
Ace was obviously talking about the system clogging and water backing up until it overflowed the tank and spilled onto the flow. I could suggest looking up the definition of 'overflow', but I wouldn't want to come off as rude or anything...

Dude, nothing you say can insult me.. However, by definition a skimmer box is in fact an overflow.

I call BS. By that definition I would bet that not a single person on this forum has an "overflow" on their tank..

Are you frigging kidding me?

2540183127_f27531e414.jpgBy definition, in the aquarium world this is an OVERFLOW. You can call it anything you like. That doesnt change the fact.

When he said "I've never had an overflow" he wasn't saying he didn't have an overflow box. He was saying he never had the box clog up (like he said the pipe-based system could), backup, and overflow the tank onto the floor. Hell, later in the sentence is "...works flawless and the overflow box is tiny in the tank" so it was pretty obvious.

You made a simple mistake. No need to get so attached to that mistake that you feel the need to defend it.

LOL, exactly.. 1-1/2" hole is big enough for any algae or normal size snail or crab to not cause a clog, but with a lid over the top of the box there is no way anything could get into the pipe anyway. ;)

I have had a few overflow'd tanks with my HOB overflow box in the early days before I figured out how to prevent that after a power outage. ;)

Look at the arrow.. imagine if the teeth got clogged with algae or a turbo snail plugged the hole.. the tank would overflow onto the flood wouldn't it?

This thread got funny.. let me help out fshfanatic some:
overflow
vb [ˌəʊvəˈfləʊ] -flows, -flowing, -flowed formerly, -flown
1. to flow or run over (a limit, brim, bank, etc.)
2. to fill or be filled beyond capacity so as to spill or run over

By definition, an overflow is when you fill something past its capacity and its contents get out of the container. An overflow BOX is something used in an aquarium so when the tank gets to the point of overflowing, it falls into the box which then flows through a drain line. Think of your sink, you put a stopper in the bottom and turn on the faucet, the sink will overflow, pull the stopper, it drains, that does not mean the drain is called an overflow, does it? LOL.

The whole point of my posts was simply to say "Bean animal, in concept, works great, but all the implimentations I have seen of it leave a lot to be desired and leaves me with cause for concern". Those flaws I have seen are easily overcome with an ABS box instead of glass with teeth cut in it and a black lid on top of the box.

What the heck happened here? :)

After a long day, I needed to come home to a thread like this
