Where do you guys and gals buy your rocks from? I'm in NY and for the most part all the LFS in my area sell rocks for saltwater aquariums. I'm in search of large rocks.

If I buy any online I'm afraid shipping will cost more than the rock itself, although I couldn't find any online retailers.

Huh?

The local creek has a huge selection at nigh unbeatable prices! That is, unless you get caught by a park ranger! Also picked up a crawfish there.

Try a landscaping or gardening store. Tell them what you are looking for and explain that you need something that has been around as little chemichals as possible. Then of course take it home and boil it.
I just helped my friend find some nice rocks for his 75g african tank at a local garden center.

A garden center... I should have known that.
Trying to locate rocks to buy is by far the hardest thing I had to do yet. Choosing the equipment was easy compared to this. Thanks for the idea. I prefer dark rock or a dark earthy color, not onyx or anything like that.

You don't need to boil rocks. You risk injury to yourself as they may shatter. Just give 'em a good scrubbing and soak them. Drain and soak. repeat until the water is clear. give 'em a scrub with a mild bleach solution if you're worried about anything alive on them. then soak and drain a few times.

Also check the yellow pages to see if you have any rock quarry - these are really cheap too - free sometimes.

I still boil rocks (especially from creeks) because you dont know if you get all the spots where foreign objects reside. Boiling pretty much kills all. Out of the countless rocks I have boiled, I have not had any issues.

Good Luck
