I was in my 8th grade World History class.
The teacher next door had her TV on and saw the first tower go down. She called me to take my class to her room (I had no TV), so we joined her very small class. Honestly, I thought they were talking about the 90s attack, so I was talking about that to my fellow teacher when the second plane hit the Twin Towers.
Sadly, my class cheered. The news was just reporting that 40,000 people were in the building. Appalled, I asked them if they realized that enough people had died to make a city - they just looked at me...
The next day, they came to school terrified. They had watched the news at home, and our local news (Baton Rouge, LA) had run stories wondering if we were next because we had the largest petroleum plant in the U. S. (Exxon).
I remember talking to a another teacher outside the next day when a plane flew overhead. He freaked and ducked!
I was furious at Al Qaeda, as were most Americans. Ironically, a few days before, I had just told my class about Al Qaeda to interest them in World History. To make it relevant to today, I had just told them that the Jewish-Arab conflict cold be dated back to Abraham (it wasn't a religious message). I even told them about the first Twin Towers bombing in the 90s. Imagine my surprise when 9/11 happened just days later.
As an aside, I was cleaning out a drawer when I ran across a Twin Towers keyring. My mother had given it to me as a souvenir, and I'd never used it because I already had a keyring. I broke down and cried and raged for a while. I sat there thinking that i would never see what my Mom saw. I raged at the death of thousands of people, thankfully not 40,000. I raged at the glee of Osama bin Laden at the news of the Towers destruction. I'm for one am glad he's dead. It took them long enough. I don't know if i support assassination, but I do support self defense!
I was glad that world response that counted to me was supportive of us. I was in Brighton England, interning at the Tory Conference the day it was bombed. My flatmates had just left the ball. i'd returned to London and overslept the next day. My mom and best friend were frantic as were the staff when they couldn't find me in class. I was stunned at the news.
