i will be needing to buy some more food for my common and fancy goldfish in the next week or so, and i have no idea what i should be looking for. im in the uk, and at the moment i am feeding tetramin gold japan mini sinking pellets, they seem to be doing well on these but i am wondering if there is anything better out there i can get hold of easily which i made specifically for goldfish, moreso my fancies as i dont want them to end up with balance problems, so sinking food is a must in my opinion. i have looking into new life spectrum and am not sure as its listed for tropicals not goldfish, and ive now looked up mazuri and have absolutely no idea what i would need ot order, in what quantities or how long it would last. any help and opinions more than welcome, thanks.

i have used omega one gold fish pellets sinking and hikari lionhead formula the only one of hikari that is sinking

There is a Goldfish New Life Spectrum. But the Large Fish Formula I mentioned before has the same formula. The Garlic in the Thera+A Large (3mm sinking) can kill parasites, both internal and external. This is not just good for treating problems, but excellent at preventing them too, so that would be a good option as well. I have fed my goldfish NLS Large Fish Formula exclusively the entire time I have had them (almost two years for these fish). I have not seen any shred of evidence that there are any issues at all. HERE is a video of my tank.

One of the best foods for goldfish (according to a lot of people I have talked to on the best goldfish only forums) is ProGold. I talked to one person who has fed both that and NLS and they didn't see a difference.

I suggest giving it a good four month trial, worst case scenario you don't get the same results others have with it and you can always switch back.

The Hikari Lionhead would be a good second option, Ocean Nutrition is also supposed to be pretty good (I think they have a sinking goldfish pellet).

I would not feed Omega One, they have artificial colors and questionable preservatives.

If Ethoxyquin is the questionable preservative you are referring to, it is in all fish food containing marine proteins.

If it is a different preservative, please let me know so I can learn more.

Thanks in advance. I appreciate your knowledge and information regarding fish food...and fish keeping...

BTW, your tank vid is pretty sweet.

Omega One contains tocopherol and ethoxyquin. Yes, ethoxyquin is in other foods too, by law it has to be in any meal entering the U.S. The questionable part is why? Is ethoxyquin only in the meals and they simply admit it is there, or are they also adding it to the food as a whole (not what you want)? When I emailed them about it they never replied. Generally if there is no reply at all it is not the good possibility. This on top of the artificial colors just says 'no' to me.

I simply see no reason to risk their health on this food when there are foods out there that are better.

Just so you know there is a whole article on Fish Nutrition in my blog that you may want to check out.

No, but I have been asked that more than once.

I don't want people to think I am stuck on one brand. I can't wait for a better food to come out because that means it will be EVEN better. And there are a few ways NLS could be better. But the experience I have had while using it exclusively is unbelievable sometimes. I just want to share that with others so that they can know it is not just another overhyped company with about the same food. I want people to know that, although I expect no one to switch to it just because of what I say or never question the results they get, but to know that it is worth a good trial and that worst case you find it isn't best for your fish and you can always switch back or try some other food you haven't used before.

From what I have read, Tocopherol is vitamin-E. Wheat germ is a good source (which is an ingredient in lots of fish food).

This, to me, is less sketchy than ethoxyquin and artificial coloring.

They have it listed as a preservative. And all together still not necessary since there are better foods out there.
