My 29 gal tank inhabitants are:

-male betta
-cardinal tetras
-black neon tetras
-glowlite tetras
-otos
-amano, tiger, sunkist and cherry shrimp

I found the head of one of the shrimp, still red and not white like a molted exoskeleton. The creatures have been living together since March and this is the first time I found any real corpses. Why the change? If it's the betta, will another centrepiece fish like a ram eat the cherries too?

it could well of been any of your tetras as they will readilly (sp) eat shrimp.

My money's on the Betta.

Oh nooo, I've always thought tetras were harmless....So is there an ingenius way of deducing who the shrimp eater is or will I have to wait to see if more deaths occur even with the betta removed? It's too bad, because I really wanted a diverse community tank.

24 hr surveillence is too expensive an operation, lol. I'm rehoming the betta to a smaller 5 gal (poor guy, not sure if he'll like the downgrade) and keep my eyes peeled.

P.S. Wait a minute! Will any shell evidence show in the betta's poop?

truth is, any of the tetras ot the betta could have done it.. Or heck, It could have been a conspiricy, a group effort... Have you ever tasted those RCS??! No wonder they ate him!!

nope it wont show in its poop.lol

Its also possible the shrimp died. If you haven't been noticing a large decline in population, i wouldn't worry to much right now.

I've been told that ghost shrimp look different when they're dead (pink vs clear). Do cherry shrimps that die of natural causes change colours? I only have 8 cherry shrimp and they don't seem breed, so the present population is very special to me :)
