As I'm setting up my thirty gallon I noticed a very small (maybe a quarter centimeter) superficial etch on the bottom glass. My paranoia in tow, the fiancee insists it's nothing to worry about.

So I question - is it something to worry about?

And in addition I'm just curious as to who has ever had a tank crack, leak, or just plain explode?

Only had a tank leaked but the tank was already in use for 18 years and I had a hiatus away from the hobby for almost two years wherein the tank was never in use. Three years later, I had a fish crashed into the glass as it was bullied by another and I noticed the silicon sealant seems to be peeling off. Tank leaked after silicon gave way. It's back in action though after I had someone fixed my tank.:)

Some of my tanks cracked only because I was careless with what I was doing and other circumstances. Umbrellas whacked two, one plastic 10g tank dropped and I could go on with terror back in my mind.

Any pics of the etch? If only an etch, nothing to worry about unlike an obvious deep etch that could be a crack.

Digital camera is fritzed or I'd put up a pic. It's just deep enough that if you run your fingernail across it you can feel that it's there. Nothing on the other side of the pane. I was thinking about putting a little silicone over it since it's on the bottom and no one would see. Not sure if that would help, or if it's even necessary.

I just reread the measurement of the etch again. I don't think I'd worry about that but wait for further responses and see if it does need to be fixed or okay in the long run after all.

My 55 gallon corner tank cracked on the bottom and started wooshing out water at 5am, luckily I had another 55 gallon to put the fish in. It was crowded, but they were in water at least. It lost about half the water before I was able to siphon the rest out. Now I'm paranoid about all my tanks and always will be.

I had a 100g tank seam randomly come apart one time... but the tank was 20 years old and had been full its whole life (I had it for about 2 years)

ever since then I always reseal ANY used tank I get... but a simple etch like that isnt anything to worry about-- the seams are what you have to watch

I had 300Gallon tank come apart on me. just got the thing filled with water, and the top plastic broke, wich allowed the whole front of the tank pull off. BOY was that a fun mess to clean up. For that scratch, I wouldn't worry about it, but I wouldn't just forget it's there. Keep an eye on it and it should be fine. If it starts getting bigger, then i would be worried.

wow... now I'M paranoid... got a used 100g for Christmas and didn't reseal... unknown history...

I had a seam in a 30g give way on me one time. It was used with an unknown history. I did fill it with water outside to check it before I filled it in the house, and there were no leaks. But a couple of weeks later, I came in the house and thought, "What is that odd noise?" A narrow stream of water was shooting straight out from the tank. Lost about half the water before I got it siphoned out. Oh, and by the way, there was a hardwood floor under the carpet. Several boards buckled, even though I sucked up as much water as I could with a carpet cleaner, and rented a floor blower, all to no avail.

I actually had gotten two used tanks given to me at the same time. The 30g glass that leaked, and a 45(ish)g acrylic that didn't. I had that acrylic up for several years with no problems. In spite of that, I never have bought another used tank. But even with new tanks, I still worry. Fortunately the house I'm in now has a concrete floor under the carpet.
