There was a "what funny things does your fish do" thread in the Cichlid section. Since I don't have Cichlids, I didn't post there.
After having the community tank of Harlequin Rasboras, White Clouds and Gold Barbs for a couple of months, my wife noticed that they followed her when she came to the tank. She said, "Watch this!", and she walked from one end of the tank to the other, and the whole group would follow her. In my head, I hear their voices - they sound like the alien toys in the gumball machine from Toy Story. "The human is over HEEEEERE!" I had heard that Cichlids are known for their intelligence and will recognize people, but it kind of surprised me that the community fish do that.
I also noticed that they all like to congregrate in the front corner of the aquarium in the upper half. I wondered if they were afraid of the bubble stone I had placed in the corner, but I'd see a few swimming over there from time to time with no problem. But in general, the group likes the upper half of the one corner.
Well, one morning I get and turn on the light, and they're pretty evenly distributed throughout the tank. They're already pretty active, so I don't think that was their "sleeping" positions. Then I realized that the TV was not on, and the corner they like to stay in is the one closest to the TV, and you have to be in the upper half to see over the couch into the living room. So I'm theorizing that they are attracted to the glow and apparent motion of the TV. Either that, or it's because my wife and I are over in the living room, and they are trying to be near.
Anybody else's community fish watch TV, or have other odd behavior?
