Why 6 as a minimum # for schoolers?

if you were stuck in a room for the rest of your life. youd wanta be with at least 5 other people wouldnt you? it would get old being stuck around any less.

lol...it depends on the other people. Personally, the only person I'd need would be a female.
Hmmm, now 5 females would be fun....at first.

yes it would.

girl: were through! ive had enough of you
only male: well thats too bad who else are you gonna go to:raspberry:

Personally, when I see anyone use the word "schooling" I mentally replace it with shoaling because that's really what they mean. People on this board don't care what the technical differences are....

Hey! I care!
I think a lot of people are here at AC to learn exactly stuff like this. :)
I looked it up, but my dictionary lists them as synonyms for one another. So what's the difference?

Edit: found it explained online at http://www.bsacforum.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=7760

It seems like another great long lasting philosophic question

HOW MANY FISH FORM A SCHOOL?

:perv:

I think that depends entirely on the ratio of how many teachers there are per classroom....

Heh heh.....

But seriously, although I think that six is probably a bit arbitrary, it comes down to making a compromise that can be lived with in aquaria w/ the way in which the fish school.

For instance, some fish school not just with the same species, but the same body size. As such, if you only had four neons and one was larger, he'd be unwelcome in the school because he stood out. In a group of six, one might argue, there is a greater change for size gradiation as well as sub-groups of larger and smaller fish.

Then there is the obvious issue of safety in numbers. I'd be surprised if anything less than 5 or 6 provided that sense of being 'in a crowd,' which is essentially what these little guys are going for.

I'm sure there is plenty I either haven't thought of or just plain don't know, but this is my couple'o'pennies. I think that, barring special instructions, six is reasonable, albeit truly a minimum judging from my admittedly limited experience.
