Why do you think fish like to be around the thermometer?

I'm not sure about your setup, but in mine I have the heater next to the filter intake. It seems the Otos, who apparently like fast currents, are always by the heater or on the filter. (I know! I panic every time.)

Maybe it's more of a current preference?

PLace your heater on the opposite side of the tank (near the bottom) and this will read your "cold spot" in the tank. Tank circulation should eliminate most fo the cold-spots, but there is always areas of temperature variations.

My tank reads 83-84 at the opposite end, and 88-89 near the heater FYI

wow. i never thought of that.

i have my thermometer at the opposite end and it reads 82. I guess i have to check it out when i get home.

how big is your tank?

and also what temp should i go by?

yea i have my thermo at the other end as well... i think i will do some tinkering when i get home. o and my mollies love the heater but none of my other fish do

I had a cichlid once since he was only about an inch big. The little bugger was just small anough to swim in behind the heater and make it through.... until I came home one day and he had attempted this feat and got stuck and was half cooked. Im quite worried as I just picked 4 new cichlids today and there doing the same thing :(

I have 6 Synodontis lucipinnis, and they often swim and play together around the heater. Sometimes, they will go through periods where I rarely see them playing by it.

I have no clue why they do this. Sometimes it is while the heater is actively heating, but not always. I will try and pay more attention (and check the temp on different sides of the tank).

too funny

i have 5 mollies and they all space out on the heater, day and night. me and my girlfriend joke around and say they are watching tv. a couple of weeks ago we had to replace the heater ( fish tv ) and they started spacing out on the new one too. i think i changed the channel on them. this forum is cool.

Mine goes from 76-78' F. At night it's cooler so yeah. Maybe the thermometer interests the fish, I dunno. My pleco likes to suck on the heater, kinda random I know.

 Our yellow lab hangs out by the thermostat alot...but there are no fry there...maybe she just feels secure, who knows....
