Why submerged heaters are the best

Newer submersible heaters automatically shut off if they're left on and out of water...such as Visa-therm stealths. I don't do it as common practice but have drained the tank an left the heater plugged in. Didn't notice any difference. Yeah, it was a stealth :headbang2:

Ditto. The stealth was a replacement for a glass one that cracked after w/c without unplugging. Word to the wise: tank maintinance after a few beers is NOT recommended ;)

Someone on MFK left their stealth on by accident while doing a water change. Though it didn't break or shatter, a giant bubble formed on his heater, it kind of ballooned.
I have stealths too and love them, but I still make sure not to leave it plugged in.

My fear is that the heater becomes "stuck" on, so I bought 2 Rena Smartheaters that have a large flashing light if the temp goes + or -5 of the set temp, and told everyone in the house that if they see a flashing red light in the tank to let me know. Best I can do.

That was my reason for buying a Smartheater for the 40g.

:iagree: Depends where the submerged heater is positioned. If the heater was horizontal and close to the bottom of the tank then maybe, but it's not very often that people place it there.

It also depends if the heater is in the tank. Mine will be in a sump soon so in that case, yes a submersible heater would be safer :)

Hmm.. I have my heater horizontal and near the bottom thinking it was the best place for it. I've never really put much thought into heater placement.
