Will a AquaClear 110 work for a 40 gal?

I have a aquaclear 110, emperor 280, and a fluval 305 on a 55g right now. You cant really overfilter. You can have too much flow though if your fish dont like too much.

It should, Bettas and shrimp I know don't like fast water. As long as it doesn't act like a circulation pump it should be fine.

They shouldn't, my brother has about 15 guppy fry in his 10 gallon with a bio wheel and they are fine. I have 5 guppy fry in a 5.5 with a filter that has about 45 gph
