Also look at the bulletin board at your mom& pop LFS, I found a 93 acrylic with stand on a 3x5 card with filters and hood/lighting all included for $75. Had to talk the guy down from a $100 cause he had posted it as a 150 and it needs a little TLC.
But yest just be patient also try posting a want add on craiglist for a free tank. I see them all the time like "teen with no job or money looking for free 50 gallon all accessories included". Im sure it works otherwise I wouldn't see so many.
I would think it has to do with the sealant not being resistant enough to withstand the pressure from the water. If you were to fill it, I'd suggest doing a test run outside before setting it up in your home.
I scored a 100 gal tank on c.l. for 80$...
just keep an eye open for them, and haggle down with cash in hand.
I usually say " xxx$ cash in hand, and i'll come get it right now"
works like a charm
Just place that reptile tank on CL for $50 or swap then you'll have some money to boot. Or use the money to buy your own 1/4" window plate and make your own 18" tall tank.
If you decide do this, I definitely recommend flat bungee cords on the top and bottom. They come in black, and are cheap at Harbor Freight tools if you have one:
I did this with a 15 long reptile tank. Filled it 3/4 of the way, used a piece of plexi as a top to seal the tank (except for a feeding hole, space for a power filter) which my betta appreciated. (They like humid air)
Never had any problems...but only kept it running about a year.
Yeah, if you can afford an aquarium meant for fish it's much better, safer...peace of mind, all that. But I understand being broke, as I have been there!
You can find great deals on 4' tanks (the bigger the better value) but sometimes (as in with a teenager, who may not be working yet) there is no extra $75 or $100. If you can find a 29 long or a 40 breeder for $50 though with a stand and filter...do what you need to do to get it! Sell your comics, your CDs...whatever
