will a tank meant for reptiles hold water?

I recently bought a 20L for around $30 at Petco.

Also look at the bulletin board at your mom& pop LFS, I found a 93 acrylic with stand on a 3x5 card with filters and hood/lighting all included for $75. Had to talk the guy down from a $100 cause he had posted it as a 150 and it needs a little TLC.

But yest just be patient also try posting a want add on craiglist for a free tank. I see them all the time like "teen with no job or money looking for free 50 gallon all accessories included". Im sure it works otherwise I wouldn't see so many.

Thanks everybody :)

Btw, do 20 longs even have center braces?

I measured and the glass is barely over an eighth of an inch thick..im so so tempted just to fill er up and see how it goes.

do you know how thick a twenty long's glass is? i googled and googled but didn't find anything helpful on thickness.

I would think it has to do with the sealant not being resistant enough to withstand the pressure from the water. If you were to fill it, I'd suggest doing a test run outside before setting it up in your home.

I scored a 100 gal tank on c.l. for 80$...
just keep an eye open for them, and haggle down with cash in hand.
I usually say " xxx$ cash in hand, and i'll come get it right now"
works like a charm :D

If you decide do this, I definitely recommend flat bungee cords on the top and bottom. They come in black, and are cheap at Harbor Freight tools if you have one:

I did this with a 15 long reptile tank. Filled it 3/4 of the way, used a piece of plexi as a top to seal the tank (except for a feeding hole, space for a power filter) which my betta appreciated. (They like humid air)

Never had any problems...but only kept it running about a year.

Yeah, if you can afford an aquarium meant for fish it's much better, safer...peace of mind, all that. But I understand being broke, as I have been there!

You can find great deals on 4' tanks (the bigger the better value) but sometimes (as in with a teenager, who may not be working yet) there is no extra $75 or $100. If you can find a 29 long or a 40 breeder for $50 though with a stand and filter...do what you need to do to get it! Sell your comics, your CDs...whatever ;)
