Ok, so the service pack I downloaded and installed seems to have been successful. Now can someone clarify exactly what it does, improves, etc.? I do not really understand why I needed it, or what it will do. Any help is appreciated! :bowing:

Cory...was that SP2? If so, I'd like to know too! I d/l it a couple weeks ago, and the only difference I can tell, is that when my anti-virus updates, a box pops up and tells me my a/v is turned off and I may be at risk  . I read an article on the new SP in one of the magazines a while back, and best I remember it was mostly to fix some security holes?

Yes it was SP2 that I downloaded. And I had that box come up too, but I fixed that by shutting it off so Microsoft wouldn't "remind" me. LMAO

Anyway, I noticed a difference in how my computer starts up too... it just acts a little different. Other than that, I didn't notice anything specific.

It's basicly a monolithic security fix. Many of the things it fixes will probably never be noticed by the majority of people.

You can see MS's top ten reasons to install it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/topten.mspx

Here is a more detailed look at the biggest changes:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/technologiesoverview.mspx

And you can download some of the nitty gritty details that nobody wants to read here:

An exerpt from the description on the third link:
In Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft is introducing a set of security technologies that will help to improve the ability of Windows XP-based computers to withstand malicious attacks from viruses and worms. The technologies include network protection, memory protection, safer e-mail handling, more secure browsing, and improved computer maintenance.

Together, these security technologies will help to make it more difficult to attack Windows XP, even if the latest updates are not applied. These security technologies together are particularly useful in mitigation against worms and viruses.

That should go away once your AV is updated to work with the new Security Center correctly.

(I find I say "should" an awful lot)

Great question/topic..
I have yet to install SP2 since a few months ago I read it had possible "bugs" in it, and to wait until it's fixed.

If your hesistant about upgrading i would make a list of all your third party software and go to each vendors website and see if they support SP2. There are a lot of applications that wont work the same with SP2 as they did previously but that is the fault of the software vendors and not Microsofts. After you check your software list you can make the decision to upgrade or wait till the vendors come out with patches to make there software SP2 compatible.

Microsoft has made it very clear that they will stop supporting machines running only XP SP1 very quickly.

Interesting... since they still support 98SE. I installed SP2 and can't say it did much-no HTML in recieved e-mail in Outlook Express-it shows up as an attachment I use Zone Labs, so I turned off the Windows firewall. There is some pop-up control that wasn't there before, but I've had scripts set to "prompt" for quite a while now so it's a moot point.
