Would this be too much fish for a 40 gallon fish tank?

I would not try keeping a male with female betta's. You will have carnage on your hands. The females would be fine, or the male, but the combination of the 4 together would not end well. Breeding wouldn't be the issue, they would probably kill each other first.

Well if I keep the gouramis and elimate the betta, what other fishes could I add? Another school of cardinal tetras or would the bioload be too much then? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also the malyasian trumphet snail...should I introduced it to my tank at some point for the burrowiing and the algae eating or do I already have enough bottom feeders. I'm aware the MTS breed like rabbits but I'm doing it for the plants...right?!

I also have a 40 breeder planted tank :)

This is my stocking

10 neon tetras
3 panda cories
1 male halfmoon beta
tons of cherry shrimp

The fish get some of the shrimp but in a 40 breeder that is well planted there is no way they can get them all. After a while my betta has gotten lazy and pretty much stopped hunting them. I started with 12 shrimp and now I have 50+. I also added some leaf litter to the tank which helps give them extra hiding places.

I also have a lot of different species of snails including MTS. Nothing wrong with keeping them IMO.

1 male betta or gourami
1 swordtail
7 panda corys
1 bristlenose pleco
8-12 neon/ember/cardinal tetras (haven't decide which one/might mix them)

Looks good to me.
