I just re-formatted and re-installed windows xp pro on my laptop. I have installed the various drivers and all of the windows updates. Nothing else. No other programs. Why is it taking up over 6.5 GIGS of space? This is driving me crazy!

Anyone ever run into this? 6.5 gigs for just an operating system is unacceptable. How do I fix this? My other computers and my work computer do not have this problem.

Can't be right my pro only is about 3 gig.....Start over again and make sure you don't install SP2 (crap), you have to remmeber that the drivers take up space also and most drivers aren't needed with XP.

properties on the windows folder is 2.78 gigs.

drivers are for the video card, (or screen doesn't display full resolution), sound card, and touchpad. 20-30 megs tops.

there are no other folders to check. hidden folders are on. if i add up all the folder sizes, they just don't add up to 6.5 gigs, but explorer shows 6.5 gigs used.

arghhh!!!

There may be hidden install files, I've had this problem before.

And oh, BTW, XP Pro w/ SP2 can range into the 8-10G mark. SP2 killed my last machine upon attempting to uninstall it, so I upgraded my main OS drive from 6Gig to 160Gig... no more problems.

Good luck. XP pro is awesome, but very very large.

Have you defragged? I've found that quite a bit of 'empty' space is lost during installation due to fragmentation. Another note: XP will reserve a portion of the hard drive for it's own use. It's not quite another drive, per se, and doen't show up, but it is reserved none the less.

For a start XP isnt "Crap", and i suggest that you take your Hard drive out set it to slave then put in another computer then Format it there, too make sure you have completely wiped it, it seems like you have just over written your old XP.

If you dont have another computer then make sure that it gets fully formtted when setting up.

P.S Anyone in te UK want an unattended hacked XP from me, just give me a shout, automatically installs many programs inc photshop ect ect ;)

O yea dont forget Linux! :)

nope, i wiped it clean to begin with. full format, new partition, boot from cd...etc.

however, i just found the problem. system restore was set to take up 10% space for it's own use. i reset that back to 1% and found my extra 3 gigs. i've never had this problem before. what a pain.

thanks for the replies.

System restore--that's what it was! Sorry, I couldn't recall why it had that reserve set up for itself.

I am going to say get LINUX. I use windows at work becuase I HAVE to. But for my home stuff I use Linux, you can not beat the stability. Also access to my files when I am not at home

mike,

no can do on the linux. red hat doesn't like to run with the bios on my laptop (dell inspiron 8500). even says so on their website.

also, the fiance is just barely average on computer usage. i think anything other than windows might scare her when she turned it on. gotta keep it safe for the kiddies you know?
