xp pro install

The latest version of linux isnt that bad or hard to use, maybe you could make an extra partitiion or maybe on another drive and put it on there to see what you and whoever else thinks, as it has been said its far more stable you just have to get used to it.

And software and games ect maybe is a lil harder to get hold of, buit not a problem!

I have been trying to get a hold of red hat, which one do you have?

You can find ISO's for most linux distributions @ www.linuxiso.org

Start over again and make sure you don't install SP2 (crap)
I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that one, at this point, for the average person having an XP machine connected to the net without SP2 installed is simply a bad idea.

FC2 also just go to http://www.redhat.com/mirrors for a list of sites to get it from. sick-lid Linux is easer then windows IMHO. Well with all the crashes windows has (it still can not handle 30+ programs at once. And when it is setup it stays setup, I have never had to go in and rescue a configuration of Linux. And when you setup something one way it stays that way, I am getting so annoyed at the windows box at work, it keeps resizing the stupid task bar, I want it 3 high, it changes it to 2 high every night!!!! What does MS know what I need more then I do!!! I don't think so. Plus the cool things I have done on Linux I would not even attempt on windows.

Some of my C++ programs I have done need a good stable environment to work with.

Try running the well known F00F bug on the Pentium series of CPU's on windows your system will just stop on Linux, it will see that instruction coming and segfault the program with an illegal instruction, I know I did it on purpose once for the fun of it to see what would happen on both.

Also to safe for the kids, I can not think of any other system safer for kids, no IE browser hijacked to point to porno sites at start up and popup adds. No virus, they can not alter the system, you can put up a squid proxy to keep an eye on what your kids are doing on line. No spy ware (as stated before) your kids can not change your settings, and if they run a command that would kill a windows box it will not hurt a Linux box do to the security built in. Run "deltree c:\" on windows say good by to the files that are not open run "rm -rf /" on Linux as a non root user, never log into Linux as root unless you have to, and it will just fail. Also the stuff I am saying for Linux also goes for BSD. Also with the use of the /etc/resolv.conf file you can ban a domain from your computer, and send the system else where, and it will work on not just web browsers but all TCP/IP traffic.

Why would you say this? With a good firewall and spyware/bloacker and virus scan SP2 is no use and with it on the system more people (I have talked to) have trouble than like it.

Just my opinion but keep XP no SP2 and then you will have a nice running system.

I like SP2. My brother-in-law loves it. He's a programmer (and a gamer, so he is not fond of linux). On the other hand, my father-in-law, a Network Admin. had problems with SP2 on his machine and so went with a restore point and left it off. To each their own.

I say this because for the average person who doesn't necessarily have the best browsing habits(using IE, going to less than reputable sites), or has kids who will click on random links without thinking SP2 will help to protect them. Sure a properly configured SP1 machine, behind proper firewalls and virus protection along with good user habits could probably be just as secure as SP2, but for the average person IMO SP2 is a must.

As for problems caused by SP2, true there are some hardware configurations that will cause issues when installing the latest service pack. But these problems are few and far between in my experiance. I work as a computer tech and most of the computers that have come in with problems after a user has tried to install SP2 have had the problems caused by the large amount of spyware on their systems at the time of install. Spyware and viruses, IME cause most of the problems with SP2 installs. Personally I have SP2 on both of my XP systems and have it slipstreamed into my install disk.

NOTE: I edited my previous post to clarify what I meant. Obviously there are situations where you can't simply do a significant upgrade like a SP without careful testing(IE. large or corporate network settings, or when using proprietary or non-consumer hardware).
