Yellow LAB - Strip or not?

Yup, it is pretty sad that most websites can't agree on one thing...We have to get many different answers and decide for ourselves what we feel is safest for our little babies....But I have seen alot of pix here where the mom and pop are with the fry, so the proud owners know all about keeping fry with moms and pops ( and it seems we get better answers here than anywhere else).....but me and hubby wanted to play it safe and keep momma in the big tank and let the fry hide...we didn't know what to do in the first place...hopefully your mommy won't eat the young like that paragraph said...that would be sad and the fry just might be too big....so if she spits them out just move her back to the big tank (lights out), and raise the fry by yourself....everyone's experience is different...little fry like freeze dried shrimp and flakes..that is what we are feeding everyone and the new fry and our oldest fry named peewee (heehee)...we physically fed peewee brine shrimp (coax all the others to one side of the tank while I drop shrimp into the place peewee was hiding) and peewee is much bigger than when we first saw S/he...Hope its a she...well good luck and hope all your new babies survive...:dance2:

Good news:

I took the fry out (again) and left them in the fry tank, whilst returning the mother to the main tank after lights out.

The fry are eating (crushed flake and liquifry) and are very active and interesting. I presume some colour will come up at some point? I have read that carotene should be present in their diet early to maintain the bright yellow - what is the best source for this?

The mother still doesn't seem to want to eat, although will go to the food with the other fish... perhaps taking the fry from her prematurely means her eating action isn't back yet?

I also now have a johanni about a week into carrying :) This could be a full time job looking after these kids :)

I wish I had a working camera, so I could post some shots. The main tank is looking terrific now it's fully stocked and everything seems to be about right.

CONGRADULATIONS PAPA...AND MORE ON THE WAY....ARE YOU GOING TO PASS OUT CIGARS.....CAN I HAVE ONE????:bday: :bday: :bday: :) :) :).....oh well about the pix...it would have been neat to see them.....now ya just have to figure out to do with the johanni mama....hhhhmmmm...another tank in the making....wow...you WILL be very busy.....great job though...keep up the great work.....keep us posted.......

hehe, yes I will.

Strange though, as the tank supremo is the johanni male of the "orange female type" <- excuse me for not remembering the name, but I have another johanni group of a different type, who obviously tried harder :)

I need to read up now and see what's going on there, as I`m sure the 2 johanni types haven't interbred, as they don't mingle at all - even the females of the orange type are quite aggressive (comparatively)

I`m glad for the little bugger though, cos he's the hardest working / displaying fish in the tank - result!

I will take my cigar the size of the Good Year Blimp... ...well congrats again papa....I seem to be missing 2 of my little babies from mama(YL)..but i am still a mama none the less.....:dance2: .......:dance2:

I had one of my yellow labs acting funny about 2 months ago and i put her (did not know it was a her) into a 5 gallon hospital tank i had set up to see if she would start acting normal again.

about 2 days later i was cleaning the tank and noticed about 15 dead fry on the bottom of the tank - turns out she had been carrying - not sure maybe the stress from being moved to a new tank caused the issues. I put her back into the main tank.

Just last week i was cleaning the tank and notice one little fry hiding - i took all the rocks out of the tank looking for more and this was the only one still alive - i guess she had another batch without me noticing at all and only this one had survived.

I now have this one little guy "squirt" living in my 5 gallon tank now - seems to be doing well - i'll post a picture when he gets big enough to show up in a photo.

At least it's yellow :)

I must have miscounted, but I got 10 fry now, not 9. Got the brine shrimp hatchery instigated today, so hope that will help them on a bit now.

We feed our peewee brine shrimp when s/he was just a itto bitto bebe...and now s/he is swimming with the big ones....fry love shrimp....and it helps the fry grow faster....:bday: :bday:
