Yellow LAB - Strip or not?

Yeah, that is what I wanted hubby to do...but he didn't want to stress her out...we think that PEEWEE might be a cross breed because he looks nothing like the other 2 surviving fry we have...are ya gunna post pix of your new babies in fish photos section..everyone likes looking at new fry...we think our Mrs. Peabody(blue peacock) may be holding now....but don't know who the father is...Mr. Peabody went to fishie heaven...of course it could be Buster(OB zebra)==they mate with any female cichlid....buy we still love her nonetheless....and she has a yellow sack like thing in her mouth...hhhmmm.time will tell...:)

Well.. she eventually died.
She never recovered enough after holding for so long. I tried to keep her separate, and she did start eating, but I wasn't able to save her. It's really annoying, but maybe it was just the insecurity of holding in the main tank, and I just let it go on for too long. Each other holding female I have stripped at 3 weeks or so, and they are right as rain and straight back into their normal behaviour again.

Definately one to learn from...

incidentally, all the fry are doing well, as are other fry stripped much earlier, so I won't be leaving holding females in the main tank again!

It sounds like you stressed her to death to me. That is my 2 cents.

Yea, I probably did, and that's my bad.
I wish I knew earlier about these things, but we live and learn.

So sorry to hear about your female lab...yup we sure do learn from our mistakes....and at least ya got fry to remember her by...and good luck with raising the little tykes and tykettes...how about some pix soon of all the fry ya acquired....:) our female OB peacock is now brooding in the 20 gallon...ooohhh ooohhh more babies...what we dont want to keep we will give the LFS as soon as they get big enough...:)

Well at least you know now! They breed like crazy, my Red Zebras and my Labs both breed about every 6 weeks. Keeps my other predators happy.

Yea, it was a real shame - I tried. Anyway, I would love to post pics, but even my (quite new) digi has died, so I`m not going to resort to a mobile phone photo lol..I am moving house in 4-6 weeks, so I`ll have a lot of hassle relocating the tanks for now.
My fry tank is really lively. I have 3 different broods in there and about 45 fry of 3 different species. All the original lab (rip) fry are about 2cm and doing really well - no losses - they could probably hack it in the main tank by now, but no point with the upset coming.. The other 2 broods are doing fine also.. I`ve never known such easy fry raising...

I was suprised recently by the appearance of at least 2 new fry in the main tank - I didn't see any carriers and I haven`t been able to catch them, so it will be interesting to see if they make it when I come to relocate the tank shortly. I think they are johanni, as they look a lot like the 2nd johanni batch, but I`m a bit annoyed at not intercepting the carrier, as I always watch out for it.

oh, the fry are now able to be fed flake from the tub and feed at the surface. I have tried them with spirula tabs also.

I reckon I can sex the fry already, contrary to the text, as some fry have very definate black lined fins and feed more aggressively - seems quite obvious actually!?

Like AKA said you'll have more soon.....:)

and then it will be time for total MTS...so are you actually moving your house or just moving to a house....wow....moving a house...seen it done though...well hope you will be able to find nice homes for aaaaaalllllllllllll of your babies...you have alot of mouths to feed....well good luck with the move and hope to see some pix of any kind someday...would like to see the mixed brood....:)
