Zebra danios

A single "schooling" fish may live in a tank on it's own but that does not mean it is the best/healthiest life it can be leading. If you want a fish to actually thrive, it should have a proper environment like it would in the wild... proper pH, tank temp, tank mates, tank size, decorations, feedings, lighting, etc. Of course good tank care plays a very important role, too.

And yes, I think a single danio (or even a pair) in a 10 gallon would seem like it has lots of room to swim whereas several in a group need more room to zoom around together, so it just depends on the situation.

I do not think there is a hard and fast rule about all this... I think there are always exceptions.

And I agree that they are very hardy, fun fish!
