Zebra Plecos

zebras

Well I think I will take your peoples advice and get a couple more easily cared for fish first. As I could'nt find any in my local petshop and I don't want to worry about parasites with my first fish. I too notice a difference in prices by region of the country ie. a corn snake in NE ohio costs 49.99 but in NY and CA they only cost 19.99. I really don't want to pay 299.99 for two fish that may not live to the full age because they are wildcaught.

It seems as though you are a novice fish keeper and so I would reccomend reading up on the cycling process in one of the stickies on the newbie forum. It also needs to be said that L-46's are very delicate fish. They need clean water, daily water changes aren't out of the question, and I wouldn't go more than 3 days without doing one for them, the other thing that is critical for their health and survival is a high tank tempature. Minimum water temp for these guys should be around 82 degrees F, with a more optimum temp at 85-86. As said already these guys aren't herbivores and need a protien rich diet, this isn't to say that they won't take a slice of zuchinni every once and a while, but not as a staple diet. Frozen brine, mysis, and bloodworms are excellent food for these guys, shrimp pellets, freezedried krill, and really anything that is high in protein is good for them. You may also want to look into making a beefheart recipie, which you can find on most discus breeders websites, its high in protein, low in fat, and will make those little guys happy I am sure.

So are discus but they still need that clean water and high water temps. The Zebras need that high temp for their body to function properly just the same as discus, its all part of how their immune systems work best. Clean water only helps.

Zebra plecos are selling for $65 - $75 wholesale right now. Anywhere that has them for less than $50 is obviously getting a screaming deal from a breeder. The current rumor is that they will be going on the CITES list this year, and Brazil has already drastically limited the exports for them. If you know you want some, you need to be hunting for a breeder near you.

Daily water changes are definitely not a MUST do thing for keeping zebra plecos, but no fish is going to mind it, if you're willing to make the effort. Keep in mind they don't compete for food, like warm water, high oxygen levels, and a meatie diet and they're actually quite simple to keep. Spawning is a different story ;)
