    Pickle buckets for trickle filter?

They're PICKLES. Tough for me to imagine how something so delicious could harm fish. Bleach will take care of the smell, for sure.

    stocking a 55 gallon!

I really like the stocking in your signiture-- well, everything but the neons. I was never really fond of them. As for the wood shrimp, I figure I should mention they dont come cheap- both my LFS's has them for 10 dollars each! If you do decide on any shrimp, please cover up your filter...

Do you use almond leaves ?

I haven't used almond leaves, but am very intrigued by it. After throwing a few leaves into my shrimp tank, they immediately got attention and now are the shrimp's main "hang out".

    Standart Co2 system

For a 60ltr tank is pretty pointless to set up a co2 system. At least in my opinion it is. A 2ltr bottle of Seachem flourish/excel will be the simplest solution and will give you great results.

    DIY canopy questions

I never put a barrier between the lights and water, but then again I do drill a few holes in the back of the canopy which help with evaporation. Spray on sealers are AWESOME. Just discovered how amazing they were not too long ago. Gives it a very professional look. Dunno what to...

125 Gallon - Ehiem vs. Ehiem vs. Ehiem.

The 2217 is my favorite filter of all time- When compared to the "professional" models, it shows that they are everything but. My 2217's have worked nonstop since the early 90's and are still going strong. option #3 gets my vote. To tell you the truth, you could run this tank with only...

    What bio-media to use?

If you want super cheap and super effective, head down to your local dollar store and pick up some plastic pot scrubbers. They usually come in packs of 6 and in 3 colors.

DIY 72g Build w/custom canopy, UGJ & lots of extras (picture heavy)

Awesome instructions! This is worthy of earning a place in our DIY master thread. Everything you've written is clear-- and, well, its good advice to say the least! Definitely something for a complete noob to refer to when they need help.

    Acrylic vs Glass Tanks

Being somebody who swears by acrylic tanks, this review might be a tad biased.... I've always preferred them in MOST situations for their seamless look and ability to give fish that "floating in the air" appearance. None of my glass tanks have that. Theres always low iron glass tanks, but...

    Has anyone used this product?

A fungus infection usually means theres a bigger problem going on. How are your water parameters and what size is the tank and filter?

    Eheim 2217

How could I have missed a thread about the good 'ol eheim 2217.... My preferred media for any canister is PLASTIC pot scrubbers from the dollar store. They've got tons of space for bacteria to grow, dont get clugged very easily, and well, they're a dollar.

    Overflow

An overflow is needed when someone has a sump under the tank. A sump is a place to put many tank things, like heaters and special filters called "wet/dry's". If you don't plan on running one (which you wont have to if you use a canister or HOB filter) then the overflow will be unused...

    Filter Media Question

I dont have an aquaclear, but in my HOB filters I take out the carbon after the first month of use. It gets replaced by assorted biomedia. some pot scrubbers if its a large filter, and the tiny cereal-looking bio media if its smaller. The answer to whether you shoudl get a sponge or more...

Old 125 w/ No Center Brace

It seems too expensive to make a glass hinge, when a wooden canopy can be much more attractive for around as much. Condensation should be an issue, if you give it proper ventilation- ie: a fan or some slits. The evaporation shouldnt be a problem. I always think it helps get me in the...

    More tanks of freecycle.

Nice finds everyone! Have you checked craigslist, aswelll? Its not free, but still pretty cheap. As for the tank, theres no need to install a brace. Too short to require one.

What media to use in canister.

I like bio-balls- they've served me well in the tanks I've used them in. But in this situation where its a smaller canister, any small biomedia would be best, as it would force the water to go through it.

Has anyone used this CO2 regulator? Opinions?

By the picture, it looks like the same co2 regulator my girlfriend has on her planted tank. It came in a co2 regulator kit. She hasnt complained about it or anything. And you should know; she complains a lot when her aquarium stuff is messed up.

    Day/Night Lights?

You could put your tank next to a window. Another solution would be to set up multiple lights, on multiple timers.
