    55 Gallon Planted Build

I'd say go with the black as well. I think it compliments the greens in the plants a lot nicer than the blue does. Setups are usually overpriced (in my opinion). It might be a better option to buy the CO2 tank, solenoid and anything else you will need (bubble counter, disperser, etc.) seperately.

    Stocking question

Bloodfin Tetras can also be an interesting fish to look into. Not the most colorful fish but it seems to be one of the best freshwater fish to exhibit true schooling behavior, unlike most shoaling fish. They're also pretty active in large shoals and are fairly easy to keep as well. Otherwise...

    55 Gallon Planted Build

Just out of curiousity, how are you going to move the tank once the stand has been built? Looking good so far though!

    Ground cover for Fluval Edge

My vote would have to be for dwarf hairgrass. The only thing with DHG is that it is going to grow somewhat rapidly and you mite end up trimming it once a week. As far as dwarf sag goes, I'm honestly not too fond of it just because it can get a little taller than most foreground plant and as...

Need guidance on doing my first planted..

If you're looking to have taller plants in your tank, definitely look into starting with cryptocoryne and anubias. Nice thing about these two genera of plants is that they both are relatively easy to care for and usually have much lower needs than other plants their size, such as swords. As...

interesting things to do with java moss?

Darn he beat me to it (the moss tree). Well, there's a lot of things you can do with moss; the only thing that's stopping you is your imagination. I've seen a scape somewhere where someone used it as flames on a building (the building was just a decor). Thought that was pretty cool. Then...

    Aquatic moss trees!

    UV filter to combat bba..

As jpappy stated, definitely look into your CO2. A lot of time, algae (pretty much any kind of algae) growth is due to a lack of CO2. Less CO2 means that your plant is able to utilize less of the nutrients in your tank and therefore it allows nutrients for algae to start growing. Also, be...

thinking about switching from cfl to t5

Wow, 300 watts per gallon is a lot of light buddy :thm:. Lol, just kidding but I think I know what you mean. Anyways, back on topic. In my plant tanks all I use are T5's and have had remarkable success. When I first started my planted tank, I did a little research into T5's and CF's and...

    WTB Glossostigma

I'm looking for some glosso (glossostigma elatinoides), preferrably in mats and from tanks free of snails. If you're interested in selling your extra glosso, please leave the amount you have and the amount you want including shipping. Thanks!

    My New Venture into Iwagumi!

MY SHRIMPS CAME IN TODAY! After wanting some crystal red shrimps for nearly two months now, I finally went ahead and bought some. They're really curious about their new tank and they've just been swimming all over the place so it was really hard trying to get some good shots of them. Well...

    My New Venture into Iwagumi!

Honestly I can't say I like it a lot yet but I'll probably keep it in there and see if it ends up looking any better once it's grown in. The plant wasn't looking that great when I got it from the petstore (brown stems, broken leave/needles (?) and it was in a tank that was about 6" tall) so I'm...

    My New Venture into Iwagumi!

Received my b. japonica today and went out and bought some Eleocharis montevidensis as well. I've split the e. montevidensis up into two groups and plants them on each of of my tank in the back and placed the b. japonica in around the rocks. The pictures aren't the best because they were taken...

    My New Venture into Iwagumi!

I actually do have a lot of runners that aren't rooted into the soil, so there are roots pretty much floating around. Mine do become somewhat uprooted, but that's actually because when I siphon, I do siphon somewhat deeply into my dhg. I wish I was in central CA though. Having a snowstorm...

    My New Venture into Iwagumi!

Well, just a quick update. I've ordered some blyxa japonica and crystal red shrimp. They should be coming in sometime next week. I'll probably be putting the blyxa japonica around the rocks and will be updating with pictures once I do that!

    My New Venture into Iwagumi!

Finally gave the tank its first trim today. After trimming the hairgrass, I've learn two very important lessons: 1. Never become a barber or a hedge sculpture because either hairgrass grows at a super, amazingly fast rate or I missed some spots. 2. If you think to yourself "Hm, that...

    My New Venture into Iwagumi!

Lol thanks. I love iwagumi set ups as well. This is my first planted tank (had many non-planted tanks in the past) so hopefully it goes well. It definitely is turning out to be an enjoyable venture to start out with iwagumi and hopefully I can call this tank one of my "masterpiece" once it's...

Looking for help on a 55gallon

Also keep in mind that black ghost knifefish are nocturnal so you probably won't be seeing him much with the lights on. With that in mind, it will be rather tricky trying to meet that need and at the same time, build a tank that revolves around something that you won't see most of the time...
