Sorry to say, there are no protective laws for fish. The are not considered to be "pets" as defined by most laws. You do not have any rights to protect the fish or to enter into her cubicle except for business purposes. It would be best for you to drop the subject and at least know you tried. It isn't fair and it certainly sucks majorly to know this fish will likely die and it could have been prevented.
Glad to know you had the intestinal fortitude to say something and to try to help. You lost the battle the minute you were called "Fish PETA". Use this as a learning tool and realize you may have come on too strong.
