Could have been ammonia defintiely. Could also have been the treatment. Meds are pretty hard on the fish.

the reason i asked what type of media is because you can fashion an air driven filter of sorts depending on what kind of media you are using. i've done it with a square rena xp sponge and it worked pretty good in a 20 gallon rubbermaid hospital tank.

keep a good eye on your ammonia and nitrite for a while here. with the filters off the tank for that many days, i would think a good portion of the bacteria would have started dying off, and it could be possible that you'll see something between a mini cycle and a full blown 'starting the tank from scratch' cycle. keep that water change bucket handy!
