I have very little experience with retro fitting. Really all I've done is kinda make a canopy thingy.

Easier to buy. Defianately, for me.
Cheaper? I think it depends on quality or home depot shop light type.

Look around here for ready to go stuff, and some retro fits.

I think with a 20 long being so shallow, that you would end up growing a lot of algae with that bulb.

Here's some stuff....

Standard 24" = 20w
HO(High Output) 24" = 24w
VHO(Very High Output) 24" = 75w

They all require a certain ballast. Although I think, you can put lower wattage lights in the HO and VHO? Just make sure you know before attempting it.

This is probably your best bet, to get the 40w your looking for.
Add one of these... http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3733+9662+13397&pcatid=13397

If you have one of those full hoods something like this... http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3733+9662+3785&pcatid=3785

You'll need to swap it out for one of these... http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3790

Hope that helps. : )

Both of those in the links above look to be only 20w, what you have now. There are 2 bulb fixtures but they don't really fit on a plastic hood. Glass tops allow more light choices or you could get the type of fixture that has legs used without a top.

If you aren't going to have CO2 be careful of too much light, much over 2 watts per gallon.
