If you go with mollies, make sure you get the short tailed variety so that the betta doens't see them as competition. I just got a new lyretail molly yesterday and his tail rivals that of a betta - very long and curly.
I keep my male and female mollies in seperate tanks unless I want babies. The 3 males do just fine together in the 55g. They ALWAYS swim together, often showing off their upper fin, but never one bit agressive with each other. It is easy to tell the males from females, once you know how to do it, and your LFS worker should be able to help you with this.
