I can't tell for sure, it is probably a sponge. maybe a sun coral. look it up.

I have had a successful 30 gal reef for several years now and wanted to start a 5 gal as an experiment. Long story short, I failed. Good luck.

Tanks going pretty good thus far. I am however having a problem maintaining my ph. Last liquid test was 8.2 and a mechanical tester gave me 7.2. I think the mechanical tester is a fluke. It was cheap off eBay.
I am using Red Sea coral pro salt with ro from LFS. I mix 5 gallons (1 cup per gallon) at a time with a power head and a heater. I usually mix 24 hours before my w/c.
Any suggestions would be nice.

I have been having issues with my GSP not opening. My calcium is at 440 ppm. Anything?

What liquid test kit are you using and whats the exp. date on it? If its a cheap tester it could be faulty they should be calibrated somewhat frequently.

Wheres the GSP placed? Lighting? Circulation? Know the phophate levels? Using any type of phosphate removing filter media?

API test kit. Exp date 2015. Gsp are lower front. Not over circulated may be a little under phosphate are 5.0 ppm and calcium is 360 ppm.

Calcium is low but that doesn't affect GSP, placement seems ok, a little more flow wouldnt hurt. None of the polyp's are opening at all? GSP is usually rather hardy even growing well in less then ideal conditions, one of the few things i know is bad for is some anti phosphate filter pads.

I just started dosing calicum. I have a duncon who is doing gret compared to my gsp. So sdhould I try to reduce my phosphats?

Calcium at 440 is not low. There is absolutely no reason to dose your tank at this point and it will likely do more harm than good.

However, a PO4 reading of 5.0 is insanely high and likely the reason your GSP are not opening.

So how long has the 40B been running? Have you tested ammonia, trates and trites?
