I will 100% agree with not stirring the sand. I keep sand in 8 of my tanks and it is amazing! I keep MTS in all of them but as stated before, they do not venture deep enuf to hit the anaerobic areas but still keep the aerobic areas detrius free.
Go about 4" deep and never stir never look back! You will see your nitrates drop which is the main reason to do water changes in an established tank, aside from adding trace elements.
I love my playsand from Home Depot. It looks natural, because it is, and the mix of grains and colors adds to the appeal. It's also slightly cheaper than PFS. but at $3-6 per bag, what does it matter? Lol.
BTW I have about 900lbs of sand total lol. It's great stuff!
