It's not just a matter of bioload, it's room for 5-6 (a minimum for most loaches) 3+ inch fish to swim. Of course they're sometimes sold at only an 1 1/2 or 2 inches so it would be ok for a while.

Notophthalmus

I put the 'snork' in 'snorkeling'!

On madtoms: This site states that their Tadpole Madtom got to 5 inches long:
http://aquarticles.com/articles/ponds/Engelking_Tadpole Madtom.html

Even in the 3-4'' mark I'd feel uncomfortable including it
Edit: the Margined Madtom has a documented size of 100-150 mm. Too big, methinks.
Yeah, but those are whoppers. 3" is more typical for both, and they're not frenetic, bust-their-noses-on-the-glass type fish. I wouldn't put them in anything smaller than a 10 gallon, but I think a 10 is adequate for one or two of these fish.

Schizo - Noto's comments on madtoms apply, IMHO, to kuhlis. Most of the normal/stripped kuhlis that come in grow to 3" and they are usually a mixed lot - they're all wild caught and the species depends upon the location they're obtained from. I think a 10 gallon tank will work, and 3 is as arbitrary a number as 6 or 10 or the balls of hundreds you'd really need to recreate a native environment.

All just my $.02 worth...YMMV.

Er, in a divided tank? Or can you actually keep a male and female together (I'm guessing you don't mean MM pairs) in a 10G? I never did much research, but I thought you'd only put a pair in a tank long enough for them to breed, and then divide them again. If you meant females though, a trio would make perfect sense, yeah.

I'm going to admit to being a little curious about this.
I was referring to the wild species. Should have been more specific. There are exceptions such as the Betta splendens as you pointed out. Thanks for the correction. It's not really possible to keep a male and a female Betta splendens unless we meant the sorority.:)

I was talking about the mosquito fish that get up to .75 inches. I really hate common names sometimes. I have to admit to not researching them much, besides a little book knowledge on them-I'll do some more and then clarify on the list.
That's what I always said.
