I have a 55 gallon tank, with a penquin 350 filter. It has been running for about 5 months.

Recently, the water has become cloudy. It has previously been crystal clear. The tank had no algae for a long time, but now has algae on the rocks and so on. I keep the glass algae free.

I have these fish in the tank:

4- maingano johanni
3- melanchromis johanni
3- electric yellow labs
3- chizumulu zebra
3- chilumba zebra
1- upsidedown catfish

I will be adding an Emperor 400 filter soon.

Could the cloudiness be a result of decaying algae??? I recently changed to fresh carbon, which with a partial WC helped, but the water has yet to return to its original clarity.

I vacuumed the gravel thoroughly today, did a 50% WC and changed the sponge/carbon filter. I also changed the carbon in the media basket. I plan to do another partial WC tomorrow.

Some of the lava rock in my tank, particularly the rocks on top, has a considerable amount of algae on them. Should i remove these rocks and clean them??? Perhaps i should disassemble my caves and vacuum those areas to remove any waste from these otherwise hard to reach areas???

I appreciate any input anyone would be willing to share.

did you do any changes to the tank when this happened like add more fish, cleaning the tank or did you just wake up to it cloudy one day. What kind of cloudy is it green or milky color ?

It is most likely that the large bioload from the fish have caught up with the lack of filtration. Your ammonia levels are probably high.

It is a milky color. It slowly began to look cloudy, a little cloudy last week, more this week. Nothing else changed in the tank other than there is a noticable amount of algae, whereas before there was not.

I will be adding an emperor 400 to my penquin 350, which i hope will provide more than enough filtration.
Yes, the 400 will help. On my 2 current 55s I have 2 350s on one and 2 400s on the other. They both house about 13-14 full grown africans. The water is always crystal clear (plus the normal 15% weekly water change).

sounds like a bacteria bloom usually brought on by changing gravel, medications that would kill the beneficial bacteria, changing entire filter medium at once. tarheels910 is right about the bio load as well you should do some water test. continue to do water changes and cut back on the amount of food you are feeding to get some of the excess nutrients out of the tank.

Actually, Don't use medication for it. Do a water change and add some filter floss to the filters, the filter floss will help to clear the water up. I had the same thing happen to one of my 55g tank, and all I did was add filter floss to my canister filter.
