Cloudy water

Your filtration can't keep up with the bio load you have. Same happened to me before I installed an Aquaclear 110 filter in my 55 Gallon to run with my Eheim 2217.

Got rid of the AC110 for another Eheim though, not used to having noise coming from my tank, Eheims are just so silent :)

Actually, Don't use medication for it. Do a water change and add some filter floss to the filters, the filter floss will help to clear the water up. I had the same thing happen to one of my 55g tank, and all I did was add filter floss to my canister filter.

I have no intention to medicate the tank to alleviate my problem. I intend to find the source of the problem and eliminate it. I thought filter floss was more for mechanical filtration. Maybe I am mistaken.

I will be adding an Emperor 400, hopefully today. I have never used an Eheim filter, but I'm very pleased with my Penquin 350. It is very quiet.

The cloudiness in the tank has lessened since yesterday's WC. I think the new carbon is helping. However, it is still not as clear as it has been. I wish i hadn't put off buying additional filtration.
Anyone familiar with the Penquin 350 filter is aware it is equipped with 2 media baskets, 2 sponge/carbon filters, as well as two bio-wheels.
In one basket i have activated carbon. In the other i have a "pot scrubbie", for additional bio filtration.
Assuming the Emperor 400 also has 2 media baskets, any suggestions as to what i should put in the baskets??? I would have a total of 4 media baskets, so maybe fill two with carbon and two with filter floss??? It's seems unnecessary to use pot scrubbies in the baskets, as the 4 bio-wheels should be ample bio-filtration for my load.

Okay heres the deal with these 2 filters. My current 2 55s are set up with 2 Penguin 350s on one and 2 Emperor 400s on the other.

The Penguin 350s have been great and kept my water crystal clear ever since I have got them.

Now I origionally had the same problem as you with my other 55. I only had one 400 on there and went out to buy another one. I put it on the other side and filled the media trays with this : http://www.petsmart.com/product/ind.../PET/2860209&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1 to get rid of ammonia.
It worked and my water was crystal clear in just a few days.

Penguin 350:
Does not come with media baskets.
Doesnt hold much water for a filter.

Emperor 400:
Comes with extra media baskets.
Holds almost double the water of the 350.
Has dual pumps.
Has spray bar for biowheels to add maximum biological filtration.

The price difference for these two filters is about 15 dollars. If you have a penguin 350 already, go ahead and get another one. But if you want to take it a step up, get the 400. Both are great filters and will help turn your tank over. Good luck.

We recently set up a new 72gal BF and are having the same problem. I am using a Rena Xp3 filter with the 300 watt Smartheater (I mention this only because it replaces the regular water intake with one that heats the water before it goes into the filter -- I don't know how much it affects the water flow, if at all). There is only a 6" oscar and a 2.5" GT in there! At first we thought it was because we were overfeeding the first couple days -- trying to keep the oscar from picking on the GT (they are fine together now) -- but even after a 50% water change and thorough gravel cleaning, the water was clouded again the next day! I think that it may have been a little cloudy even before the fish were put in, so maybe the new gravel started it??? The filter has the foams, ceramic rings, chem-zorb, and the microfiltration pad (plus the bio pad from our now empty 20 gal to help kickstart the bacteria during cycling). We are going to add additional charcoal to one of the extra baskets to see if it helps. I don't need another filter already, do I (I know I will when the fish get bigger)?

Got the Emperor 400 today. I must say I'm very pleased with the product. I installed it on the tank this afternoon, and i swear there is already a difference in the cloudiness. (Maybe I just wanna believe that...eases the $80 sting).

Tarheels:
Thank you for the suggestion as to what to use in the media basket, unfortunately they didn't have this product at my LFS (Big Al's), and I was pressed for time to find a similiar product. I will look for a bio media that fits in the basket. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

The Emperor 400 is a pretty dandy filter. I am suprised at how much more water it holds in comparison to my Penguin 350.

I would appreciate if others with this filter could give me some suggestions as to what bio- media fits best in the baskets. Tarheels has suggested one that is unavailable at my LFS.

Also, the intake tube provided with the filter is a little too long, so I have set it up to draw water from mid-level. The Penguin is drawing water from the bottom on the opposite side of the tank. Would it be worth it to cut the intake tube so that the intake of the Emperor reaches the tanks bottom??? I could then open the mid level intake, another handy feature of the Emperor filter.

The cloudiness in my water has all but vanished after only a couple of days of running the Emperor 400. I still am without a bio-media product for the refillable media baskets. The product suggested by Tarheels is unavailable at my LFS. I welcome any suggestions from members who use this filter.

You could even take some filter floss and cut it into strips to use for bio-media. Yes, I had to take a knife and cut my filter tube as it was too long. I leave the mid-strainer open all the time. I actually took the blue thing off because IMO it stands out too much.

Also, why didnt you just go to petsmart.com, print it off, take it to the store, and price match it. It only would have cost 42 dollars.
