euthanization of fish

The only time i euthanize a fish is when i can positively identify the disease the fish has, and that there is no cure.

That's the only time I've euthanized a fish, too. I don't know why you'd assume anyone would kill a pet with abandon.

I added ice cubes in a cup of water and let them melt. Then added the fish and more ice .I hated it .

freezer method has worked for me. Fill a ziplock bag with water put the fish in and put it in the freezer the cold air knocks the fish out and they die pretty quickly. Setting a fish out into a stream or pond is not a good idea.

I agree. There is also a local pet store that doesn't sell any community fish because they claim that to many people have let them go in streams.

Ok am getting up on my sounding board. Your fish is your pet right just like a dog or cat. If that animal is sick you take it to the vet right and give it meds...same thing you would do for fish too. If your med methods did not work and your fish is suffering then yes you should euthanize it. If you were going to put your cat or dog to sleep wouldn't you want it to be in the most painless and most humane way possible? Cutting off a fish's head is not painless, putting them in a pond to be free is yes AGAINST the law as it promotes disease in the water and can kill off existing fish that live in that water, putting it in a bag and slamming it to the porch is also not humane would you want to die that way have someone body slam your head to a porch! Come on think about it and have a little heart. I personally use the freezer method the clove oil method sounds good too just going to sleep is a peaceful way to die next time you have to euthanize a fish think about how you would want to die if you were really sick and then take that into account when you choose your method of euthansia. That's it I have vented!

Okay, so i started this thread a while ago and just checked it here is what i have pulled out of it....

ways to euthanize your fish,
1. Clove oil - fish falls asleep and dies...
2. Ice water/freezer water - fish shocks to death...
3. alka seltzer - fish suffocates???
4. chop of its head - fish loses its head...
5. put fish in bag and bash it - fish is blugeoned to death...
6. royal flush - fish goes down the ****ter...

Reasons for killing your fish,
1. irreversivble dease - cannot be treated...
2. horrible accident - fish loses his eyes??
3. anything else is a bad reason to kill your fish. If your fish isnt as cool as you thought it to be, give it away, if you kill it you must be a scum bag. Post it for free on the forums, a lot of people here would pay the shipping cost to have a nice fish never mind save one from death.

If i missed anything let me know... also alka selter suffocated em? whats the deal?

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but just think about people who die instantly due to massive SUDDEN trauma in car crashes - slamming something as small as a fish against a hard surface, very hard and fast is exactly the same. "Humane death" is, by definition, a painless death - whether it be "slowish" (clove oil or freezing) or a fast and SUDDEN death. As long as the fish doesn't feel pain (or has no chance to feel pain), all would be humane. I had a spiny eel that got sick once. I did all I could for it, but it wasn't enough - I ended up putting it into a bag and into the freezer. The cold makes the fish "go to sleep" without suffering.

But this actually makes sense, doesn't it? People think by releasing it to the wild, it will live better.

they think it will live better but in many cases the fish either dies from starvation and poor water (lots of pollution = death) or they take over the ecosystem and destroy everything else in their path. I generally equate it to setting humans free into our natural habitat. For some reason most people don't like the idea of getting dropped into the African grasslands to fend for themselves, free of the constraints of civilization and the "silly laws" that govern us (like, oh, i don't know, laws against putting animals into the wild who are not from there....)

I think in the past week I've refused sale of fish to at least 6 people because when I was describing water changes and ammonia the answer was "well who cares, its just a fish right?" "i'm sorry sir, I think you should shop elsewhere for your fish"

Alka seltzer releases CO2 in the water and dies from CO2 poisining. Basically it suffocates to death kinda like putting a plastic bag over your head.
