OK, folks, I am totally at a loss. I've been researching all over the net to try to find this info. From what I've read in other posts, in order to get my poor plants to actually grow instead of just existing, I need better light (at least 128 watts). I have a 55 gal. freshwater tank which I bought years ago as a kit. The lighting I'm using is what came with the tank. When I checked the bulbs last night (the tank has two hoods), the bulb has only 15 watts - so with both hoods that means the poor plants have only been getting 30 watts total.

But here's my dilemma. I've been all over the net looking for 18", T8 bulbs/tubes that will fit in the existing hood and there doesn't seem to be anything available in that size with more wattage than 15 watts. Advice would be greatly appreciated! Do these size bulbs exist with highter wattage or does this mean I'd need to start over with an entirely different hood that will hold higher wattage bulbs?

t-8 bulbs only come in that wattage.. Mgamer mentioned something a while back that for every 6" of the bulb you will get 5w. (or something like that)

So in your case you would either have to add more bulbs or get a whole new light strip.
Btw for a 55g you would be fine with 110w

www.ahsupply.com for 2x55w kit
or

Both kits are TOP OF THE LINE. Just with the ahsupply you will either have to build a canopy/light box or buy one straight from them..

Just if you do decide to get the Catalina fixture make sure you call them prior to ordering so that they will switch the Actinic bulbs for regular fresh water bulbs.

48'' shop lights go for near to nothing at like lowes. All you have to do is replace the bulbs with the correct range 6700-10000 idk

I'm looking at AH supply now - would you recommend the 6700K 55 watt bulb or the 7800K? I have Anubias, Java Fern, Dwarf Hairgrass, and several others that I don't know the names of. I am a totaly newbie when it comes to lighting.

Yes but watt to watt comparing shop light to ahsupply or a good t5 fixture you will see that shoplights are garbage. Good temporarily but over time i suggest a nice fixture

anything in the 5500 to about 13-15,000K will be fine. The color is for your eyes now not really for plants.
