chinese theme

they sell the plastic ones at craft stores. I picked up a few at Micheal's the other day.

I'm doing oriental theme too. I've got a vase from Petsmart with a chinese dragon on it, I also want one of those standing dragons that blow air bubbles out it's nose and one of those lanterns the takeout planters are a schweet idea, but don't worry I won't take them. my tank is crowded as is.

feel free to take my ideas, that's what this place is all about. is your tank going to be a biotope? in other words will all inhabitants be of asian origin? mine is a 20 gallon and i have 10 harlequin rasboras (indonesia, thailand). once cycled i'm going to get 1 blue or gold gourami (south china sea i believe) and a few panda corys. i also was thinking about a japanese trapdoor snail, but don't want to make an order to liveaquaria for just 2 snails.

also with the chinese takeout carton i was thinking about filling one 3/4 up with white gravel and tipping it over on the substrate so it looks as if it has fallen and rice has spilled out. (may be a pain in the a$$ when it comes time for vacuuming, but i'm going to try).

one more thing, will wooden chopsticks be ok in a tank? (unused obviously). i also have plastic ones.

Wooden chopsticks are fine in an aquarium. I have moss and java fern wrapped or tied on them in my shrimp tanks.

No, not Biotype. I have an affinity for Ember Tetras, which are from Brazil. I was originally going to go with Greek but I fell in love with the vase and the standing dragon.

then you have to dedicate this tank to asian fish. it would be a full circle. i have 10 harlequins in this tank, you can't see them in the pic though.

basically imagine that rock not being there and a rice container tipped and spilling white gravel towards the center... butt of the box facing the bamboo in the corner. (forgot to mention that chinese bridge and little Buddha statue.

i think that the white cloud minnow is a chinese fish. and then there is always the chinese highfin catfish (thats not the exact name but close)

trust me, white clouds were at the top of my list... not only being from china, but looking like something out of a chinese parade. only problem is i cooked this idea up with a blue or gold gourami as my centerpiece, and the white cloud minnows are cold water fish. 64-72*F i think. whereas gourami are right outside that in the warmer temps. havn't seen the chinese high-fin catfish, if you can post a link as to where i can buy one (didn't see on on live aquaria) i'd consider it over the panda corys.

That's pretty cool, but yeah your white gravel will get lost after some vaccing. maybe you could lay it on a large dark stone?

that is a great idea also. i'll have to consider that one. what would happen if i vacuumed all gravel except the small white pile? would that eventually be a contaminant to my tank? if i vacuumed all around except the small amount of white gravel?

or maybe have the white gravel "spilling" onto a small oriental dish? that way i can lift the dish out during cleanings and just replace it afterward. maybe remove the dish and rinse the white gravel by hand in the sink?
