officially became vegetarian about a week ago!

Can you please explain what your definition of vegetarian is, it really makes a difference in your diet? For example Lacto-Ovo,No flesh or Vegan-Nothing that comes from ANY animal milk, eggs, honey and gelatin are includd here, Ovo-No to flesh and yes to eggs and a few other such as raw vegan.

WOW! the first 'im a vegetarian' thread i have ever seen which didnt turn out to be a large bashing of "we were made to eat meat" "eat meat you woos" "idiot" "I LOVE STEAK'.

i am impressed!

This guy was vegetarian for 3 years and vegan for 3 as well. Why? because i wanted to be. Why am i not now? because i chose not to be. {{those will be your best answers when you are dealing with idiots who are trying to call you a moron}}

anyway...some basic rules of thumb.
a well varied diet consisting of a 'rainbow' of vegetables...after three days you should have consumed meals that cover a vegetable in every color.

Tofu does not need to be consumed in block form

Fruit shakes are your best friend (i used a vegan meal replacement every so often to help make up for lost nutrients when i was eating poorly)

be prepared tobring your own food - everywhere

Nuts, legumes, peas etc will help with protein

Dont become a "YOU MUST BE VEGETARIAN!!!!!" preacher...people will grow to hate you

read books and get cookbooks.
if you live with your parents be prepared to help your mom/dad cook dinner for a few months until they understand what is going on.

dont be prepared to go out to dinner and ahve wonderful meals....they will consist of 'a house salad and fries please'

your food will now be more expensive

the shopping section at the food store becomes muc much smaller

go to trader joes and whole foods

I love my green food
But I have also been a proud member of PETA for years
People Eating Tasty Animals

I grew up on a cattle ranch so you might call me biased, but I'm a huge fan of eating animal flesh.

I'm also an enthusiast for studying human evolution.

The strongest theories of our development into Homo sapiens denotes an extremely important need to eat meat.

Our brains make up only 2% of our mass but use up 20% of our calories. Without eating meat our species would have never had the luxury of developing civilization, science, technology, and we wouldn't be having the conversation over the internet.

We'd be munching veggies in the jungle and grooming each other for flees.

Can a human eating only vegetables survive? Yes.

Is it natural to our species? No.

I'm not a fan of holding delusions to what I am. I'm an animal of a mammalian species that developed a large brain by surviving on a varied diet of vegetables and most importantly supplementing it with MEAT. Meat has always held a much more valuable spot for us than vegetables.

Yeah certain animal meats are tasty,e.g meat, chicken, turkey bacon. So does Japanese cucumbers(Very ex but my plecos also love it).See what is their choice anyways. Some find insects are way tastier than chicken.I like to drink soy milk, tofu drink(chopped egg tofu in sugar water),sugar cane juice.Man imma go to the food centre again.I am craving for those again.

Hey and according to a research try not to let your child(between 0-12) be a vegan. They will have anaemia, bone deformities(rickets is a best example) etc as they don't have milk to supplement that calcium and vitamin Bs.Cause the other calcium supplements needs chewing examples are spinach, brocolli etc.And these are their crucial growing years.

JMO.If you want the best bet of getting a balanced vegetarian diet i'd say go for lacto-vegetarians.

I am not a vegetarian and I feel guilty for that. I bet a few centuries from now we'll be seen as savages for eating meat. I did grow up with vegetarians though :) Ovo-lacto, to be exact.

I would advise you NOT so make a big deal of it in the beginning, because people around you may be upset if you accidentally relapse. Some people will all of a sudden feel it's their mission to catch you eating meat.

Now, for the fun part! Food suggestions!
Eat lots of beans, mushrooms, and "fake" meat. Some vegetarians rely too heavily on pasta.
You can eat many of the same meals without meat. Stir fry with veggies. Pasta with pesto or marinara. Cheese enchiladas (or mashed potato, which is actually quite nice :))

I can recommend these brands... Quorn, Boca, and MorningStar. Quorn has this really good chicken replacement that's chicken fillets. You can cut them up, bread them, and fry them. It's really good, even to a meat eater :) Boca is good for burgers and sausage links. MorningStar has hot dogs and corn dogs. There's also a pretty good chili mix out there (one of those just add water and tomato paste, etc) with tofu ground beef, which is good for the texture. When eating this stuff, don't expect it to be like meat. Think of it as a new and interesting dish. Oh I forgot... Fantastic World Foods has a really good TVP sloppy joe mix.

Also have fun making Tofurkey for Thanksgiving. That's always a crowd pleaser ;)
