Well the problem is the Government encourage the spell as gage - it is the commonly used by engineers when referring to measuring instruments - see the screen shot from the US Geological Survey Real-time water data site.

I do have the Firefox speller too There are some words like bougainvillea which I will never remember how to spell correctly...for those instances I am very glad there's spell check!
