Mafia Game Strategy 101

Another thing I personally see no reason for. We have never had to "babysit" the new players, it is how you learn. You jump in and do it, we didn't have hand holding, and pity parties for new players. You jumped in got your butt handed to ya a couple times, learned and kept going. Don't mean to sound bad toward others, but come on if ya wanna play ya just do it. When new players get on a foot ball team do the other players of opposing teams (or their team mates) hold their hand and take it easy on them because they are new...not really.

I would have agreed with you...until the turn the level of the gameplay has taken in the past few months. I have no interest in playing when there is hardly any strategy or intellectual arguments.

I'm kind of thinking you could find somewhere to insert NPR's name in each paragraph...

Nice guide LR :)

Thank you Pir, but lets not single anyone out. NPR has actually improved his play and seems to be learning from his mistakes. I have seen him attempt to build cases on people.

Hi, I used to really, really enjoy mafia, but I finally bailed for several reasons. (It seems like the thread has been a bit of a critique on why it is no longer as enjoyable. Feel free to disregard this post, if I am mistaken.)

1) Being a low-poster from the very first mafia game (I'm fairly quiet by nature, and tend to only speak up when I think that I have something new and helpful to say), I was tired of being called impolite things because of it. After several insinuations that the game was better without players like me, I left.

2) More and more of the talk was getting nasty. I hate it when people are rude to each other, especially in a forum where you can reread and edit your thoughts before sending them out.

3) It was getting very clique-y. If you sat out a few games, it was almost like you weren't welcome back when you signed up. It was no longer fun.

4) The crazy games and rules made it very hard for someone with limited time to keep track, and often limited my participation to far below what it might have been.

Good luck getting the game back to a place where it is fun for everyone again. :)

Cheers, Brandy

I totally see where your coming from. I'm pretty quiet natured too and I was fairly quiet on my first two games because 1. I was scared, lol. And two I'm not a huge talker. But then it was 'frowned upon' so I had to post a bit more. However, I still enjoy mafia and I hope it continues.

Opinions vary I guess; personally I liked playing with you Brandy. As to quiet posters I think people need to respect different styles. Rich is fairly quiet but still adds valuable input and certainly no one has a problem with Rich. Quality is just as important as quantity. THe game needs different styles I mean I like playing with Ice but I wouldn't want to play with 20 Ices.

There are lots of time I'm content to watch the interaction between players play out, sometimes you can learn more by reading then posting. It sometimes peeves me when someone jumps on a question before the person it was directed at can respond.

I don't think the level of posting is the problem so much as the level of participation. Too many people are content to follow rather than think for themselves. Vets are sometimes hypersensitive to this but I understand their frustration.

^^^^^
the kind of crap that is bringing the games down.....

I can understand LG's point on not babysitting new players but if you are going to have that attitude then you can't dig on people for not knowing how to play and to be new at the game. You either have to let people learn or help them. You can't not help them and then make them feel like garbage for being new in the game.

Uncalled for. And thats my stepbrother your talking about, so keep it to yourself.

this looks like the end of mafia....

Don't give up hope! We can still pull this back to the way it was.

I can totally see where your coming from. I remember my first game, I (as a newb) wasn't disrespected even when I screwed up. But now, it seems that the newbs get dumped on simply for being a newb. Newbs are even dumping on newbs now, which is just sad. I vote we go back to some BTTB games for a little, and hope things get better. And thanks for the luck, we'll need it...

i remember when I started these games, everyone was so nice. But now, A newb comes in and is yelled at for, well, everything. I'm not surprised that we have fewer and fewer people playing then "the old days" that I missed ()

From what I see, here is whats needed:

1) Don't judge someone from the amount of posting, but the quality. Rich isn't a high poster, but his posts are very well written. I post a lot, but my posts aren't even close to the best there can be. Everyone has their own style, and should be permitted to keep that style even if it means they don't post a lot.

2)The Mod should be able to kill off anyone who actually goes so far as to attack someone personally. This is a game, and even if it wasn't you should never attack someone's personal life or ideas. Thats just wrong. Of you wouldn't say it to their face, don't say it at all.

3)Accept the newbs! They are the future of this game, and should be treated with respect and politness. They are still learning, so don't yell at them if they don't fit expectations that you have, thats a bad way to make them want to stay in the game.

4)Bring back the orignal games. 1 scum team, 2-3 PRs, and then townies. Nice and simple, easy for a newb to understand.

5)Make your own cases, don't just follow the guy who everyone looks up to. The games live off of the posts made my players, if everyone follows someone else this game will no longer be worth playing. I can understand newbs following other players, but there have been very good players just followin the guy in front of them. I used to be one of those, but I have been trying to make a point of not following the guy in front, and so should you! It makes the game much more fun.

If we can get those 5 things down pat then these games will get tne times better, and we may even start getting 15 or 16 player games again, instead of 10 or 11 player games like we have been getting recently. I will do my best to meet those 5 standards of mine, and i hope you do to!

I disagree that people are dumping on noobs. In fact, new players are cut a lot of slack. When they do something inappropriate is when people get after them, such as spamming the thread with nonsense. But when someone has played 5, 6, or more games and are still doing the same crap, making excuses for not posting, not forming any cases, you bet people are going to get frustrated.

This thread was not intended for finger pointing. I simply hoped to help new players or those who wish to improve their game, in hopes of getting these games back to the level of intellectualism and strategy they were at a bit less than a year ago.
