Advice - Inspection Sticker Fruad - What Should I Do?

There can be many legal reason for the difference, broken windshield replaced, tach/odometer changed, etc. You need to give the seller a chance to explain before you call the cops. If the explanations don't add up file a report of fraud. Make him prove with receipts.

broken windshield? really? he already lied to us about the car so I doubt there is any explanation other than he was trying to make money off of a car that wouldnt sell otherwise.

Talk to the seller before you start reporting anything. If it was an honest mistake on his part, there's a chance that he'll make it right. If not, then do what you've got to do.

Based on your husband's lack of attention to detail, it might actually be a good idea for you to call the guy. Don't get all worked up until you've talked to the guy.

If it was me, I would contact the local police department and explain what happened. Then I would ask for a police escort for me and the vehicle to return to the place of purchase and talk to the guy and see if he was willing to return the cash. The police cant really do anything since its a civil matter and will end up in civil court if you have to sue him for the money back. But they can provide a sense of security and might help your case be a little more persuasive to the guy you bought it from.

While it might seem like calling the cops is going overboard, following the proper channels from the beginning can save you a lot of trouble later down the road.

New Hampshire is a two party state. A recorded phone conversation must have explicit consent at both ends of the line. Failing to do this by the book will get you into more trouble than the sticker situation will cause the other guy. The fact that the VINs don't match up is prima facie evidence that there's something going on. If you replace a windshield with a used one the sticker is no longer valid on the replacement, and if you have good inspection on the broken glass a reputable glass shop will cut out your current stickers and they're still valid, at least in PA.

Here too... Ive had a windshield replacement, and they did transfer the sticker for me without even asking. My husband is going to call the guy tonight so we will see what happens. I just want it to be over with.

Before you start screaming and accusing a guy of being a criminal, call him and state your concerns and ask for an explanation. Have you even talked to the DMV or state inspection people? That and calling the seller is where I would start.

I call the non-emergency number for your local police department and ask them what the proper course of action would be and then go from there.

there are other places where the vin number is etched, on some cars its on the door and some on the frame somewhere. Just google to find out where yours are at. If you got sold a car that doesn't match the vin number of the title, then you better contact the police and fill them in on your concerns because when you go to the tag office to get it registered they will NOT register it if the vin numbers don't match up.

+1

One other possibility is that the guy had 2 similar vehicles. I had 2 84 monte carlo SS at one time and they were both the same color and everything, when I sold them I had to double check the VINs to make sure I was giving them the right title.
