Yep, there is only one species widely known as dwarf neons but of course that doesn't stop stores from labeling fish other than the M. praecox as such...common names are odd things...

And I have seen boesmanis bigger than my hands at one of the LFS here in the past. Definitely longer than 3" and quite wide as well.

I know, somehow, all fish grow big as their max size in LFS tanks, but once they get into ur tank, they don't get that big

I think you can house far more Rainbows than mentioned here. In my 70 gallon, I have 15 Rainbows, 2 Roseline Sharks, 4 GBR's, and a couple of Bristlenose.

Tank has been up and running for 3 years, and everything is super healthy. I do run heavy filtration and have lots of water movement.

Most of your Rainbows will get to be about 4". However, they are a thin fish with little mass, so they don't create a large bio load. Hope that is helpful.

I have a 75g with 14 Banded Rainbows (Trifasciata Goyder River) and 16 Pseudomugil Furcata's (purchased the Furcata's from Ms. Msjinkzd). Few not so good pics:

Another follow up to your original post.

Here's the different types I have in my tank. I favor lots of different varieties, as I like the look of the different colors cruising throughout the tank.

I really wouldn't say Rainbows "school". At least not like a swarm of tetra's or something. They are in constant motion and stay in the upper half of the tank.

Boesemani Rainbow,(Melanotaenia Boesemani)

Running Creek Banded Rainbow, (Melanotaenia trifasciata)

Turquoise Rainbow (Lake Kutubu), (Melanotaenia Lacustris)

Millenium Rainbow (Tami River), (Glossolepis Pseudoincisus)

Neon Rainbow, (Melanotaenia Praecox)

It's a mostly Rainbow tank. Have a couple of Roseline Sharks, some GBR's, and a couple Bristlenose as well. All were raised from about 1.5" when purchased. It takes a while for them to mature, but when the colors come out it is worth it.

yeah, they are beautiful. Mine used to only school when someone walked near the tank, otherwise, they would just dart around the tank.

Awesome guys thanks!! How many would you suggest getting?? Also, should I get a bunch of different kinds??? And what should I do about adding water movement to the tank??
