I don't think your supposed to be doing water changes during the medication. What do the directions on the package say? I would have removed the carbon from the filters, done a 50 percent water change, then started medicating for the duration. Then when all done, a 50 percent water change and carbon back in the filters. What do the directions say exactly?

Hi it just says add medicine after wc but because my nitrate is still at 50 i need to change water regular yes.

No. Like you said, when you change 50 percent of the water, you are diluting the medication and it is basically useless, well not useless but less efficient. Do not do water changes. Your nitrate is OK for now. It is high, yes, but your medicating, so take care of that first, then worry about your nitrates. Right now your bacterial infection is the most important thing.

Thanks for advice cradlefan ill try that and fingers crossed should I add salt if so Epson and how much.

I wouldn't worry about adding salt. Just let the medication do it's thing. The less you do to change a tank habitat, the less you stress the fish. Just add the meds and after the necessary days of dosing, do a large water change, re-insert the carbon and watch. Are they still eating?

Still concerned you are trying to treat the effect of an issue vs treating the issue itself. Have you gotten ammonia readings?

With as many water changes as he's been doing, chances are there won't be any amm readings, but once you have a bacterial infection like Popeye visible, you have to treat it. The water changes aren't going to get rid of that.

When popeye breaks out in multiple fish it is an indicator of poor water quality. Think of it like being allergic to the laundry detergent you use, and continuously treating the hives instead of switching laundry detergents.... Detergent = poor water, hives = popeye

As Adrian said to Rocky in Rocky IV.... "You can't win!" *Kiddevo jumps into his lamborgini while singing "There's no easy way out"...

Popeye is not going to fix itself...........I agree it's an indicator of poor water quality. He brought the nitrates down to 50ppm.......through water changes. That improved the water quality, now he needs to medicate to take care of the bacterial infection.........no amount of water changes or improvements to water quality will help the fish where popeye is already visibly affecting the fish.

He knows about keeping better water quality now and has been told his fish stock is too large for his tank, he has in a sense changed his detergent?
