takes time. Just dose as the package says. After you get done dosing for the amount of time it says on the package, do a large water change. Then, test the water for amm, nitrite, nitrate, and if necessary and the tests are ok, dose a second time until the popeye goes away.

Popeye is not going to fix itself...........I agree it's an indicator of poor water quality. He brought the nitrates down to 50ppm.......through water changes. That improved the water quality, now he needs to medicate to take care of the bacterial infection.........no amount of water changes or improvements to water quality will help the fish where popeye is already visibly affecting the fish.

He knows about keeping better water quality now and has been told his fish stock is too large for his tank, he has in a sense changed his detergent?

Depends on whether or not there is ammonia in the detergent... :p:

Well, really you could do away with a filter altogether if you kept a light stock and lots of plants, but I would get rid of the underground filter and get either a small H.O.B. style filter, or if you have a little money, you could invest in a canister filter for your tank. If you want to keep your underground filter, you could always put some driftwood in the tank and just tie some java fern and anubias to it. They don't need to be buried in the substrate at all. You could even put some java moss in the tank if you want, just tie it to wood as well.

Sorry mate forgot to say I've also running a fluval 206 .but heard that plants can clog up my ugf.

I don't think it's the plants so much as their roots.....If you were to get java ferns and anubias and moss for instance, and tie them to driftwood, out of the substrate, you would be fine. Although, if you want my personal opinion.....I would just ditch the UGF and just have the Fluval 206.....As long as it's circulating the water, the filter in a nicely planted tank where the plants are growing steady, isn't really necessary beyond just mechanical water filtration and circulation. I think plants are a great filter just by themselves. I only use a filter as a water pump really, just to circulate water. I don't run carbon. Just the bio balls it came with, and a filter pad to catch any debris it might suck up. If you were to do this, you wouldn't need to worry about your UGF getting clogged anyway.

I think I Will ditch the ugf and get some nice plants thanks for your advice cradlefan. When I get plants Wots the best way to put them in my tank. I've heard that you can get snails from plants I don't want my tank infested in snails .

Honestly, I just rinse my plants really well under the tap and look really closely for snails and/or eggs. I have been pretty lucky and haven't got any snails on my new tank. I have in the past got snails from plants like you said, but I didn't mind them so much....If you want to get rid of them for sure, you could do a couple things. One, use a diluted solution of bleach and let them soak for a few minutes, I think it's maybe 1 part bleach to 20 parts water.....or Potassium Permanganate which you can find online and it works similarly but you soak a little longer, or you could use Aluminum Sulfate which you can get at the store with the pickling stuff. I think the only difference between all three of these ways is the soak time and the effectiveness. Whatever you choose, make sure after the dip, you let them soak in clean water with dechlorinator (quite a bit of it) for a long while before putting the plants into your tank. You don't want any of these chemicals in your aquarium. Good luck.
