Like for instance, when I plant Hemianthus Callitrichoides, I take out the plant and get it out of the little basket, remove all the spongy material it comes in, and separate each and every little sprout and plant them maybe a cm apart or less, by long tweezers. Java fern, sometimes I attach to driftwood with green thread, or maybe plant with the rhizome above the substrate. I would definitely buy some long tweezers tho, I couldn't live without mine. Good tools of good quality are worth every penny. I buy mine from ADA aquariums online, but they are a bit expensive. Maybe your LFS has some good quality tools, but mine doesn't. Good luck.
