SUNSUN HW-302 Outside Filter setup & test

Perfect and SunSun are one and the same. There is a third name they use, don't remember it off-hand.

Aquatop, which is the brand name version I just picked up.

I will say these things have gone up in price now for all models available. I went with the currently biggest one, the he-404b, I could find. Originally a few of these sold for $100 on ebay through kool_goods but that vendor is no longer offering them. Cheapest I could find the 404B model was off amazon for $120. The slightly older 304b can still be found for as cheap as $90 though. The smaller models can be purchased for much cheaper. Most recommend sticking with the 302 or 402, as the next one up, the 303 or 403 isn't really any improvement for the bigger price tag.

Just search the "Aquarium & Fish" section on ebay for "HW-302" and you will see they are still available for the same price!

Hey Gunner,

Yesterday, I followed your setup for my own Sunsun HW-302. Great tips you got here. I just got this as my 1st canister filter on 23 Jun 2012 for my 20gal tank (inhabited by one Malawi Cichlid). Keep up the great work your doing here. You have a lot of knowledge to pass. Thanks. S/Fi

Your too kind. Many would argue that the part about passing on knowledge is questionable, your one exception, thank you. As in-line basket filters go the Sunsun is as good a performer as the best and most expensive out there IMO, so for the price its a super buy.

Just thought I'd chime in and say I've had my 302 running since July of 2010 and its still kickin it til this day.

LOVE IT

I tried the sunsun and ended up throwing it in the trash . Leaking problems and just didn't stack up against my Marineland c's and my FX5'S.

Wow. Mine has been filtering and bypassing (like all baskets) on my fancy goldfish tank since Oct 2011 without a whimper. Not that its your situation, but I think unless worn parts a large percentage of canister leaks are due to operator assembly error or harsh handling. The only filters I have ever had leak spontaneously are sumps which is expected (eventually) since they are an open non-pressurized system

What a waste.

I have an aquatop running for a month now and I cant believe I only paid twenty bucks for it!

I remember seeing this thread and reading it but I have not needed another big filter since then until now. I ended up getting a free 55g and trying to find a good filter for it. I after reading this thread and seeing that the sunsun and aquatop being cheap and works good makes me want to go that way thanks for this thread.

FYI. Although I do promote the Sunsun as a good buy and performer when it comes to the "Lid pump stacked basket design", if your willing to take a bold step toward a higher class performance design for about the same price, consider the CSF500 with my simple modifications as it performs circles around stacked basket filters.
