SUNSUN HW-302 Outside Filter setup & test

Anyone know which sunsun is the equivalent of the Marineland C-360?
Are the parts interchangable?

My C-360 started leaking the other day and I need to run some tests to figure out if it is a warranty thing or not. I have 2 months left in my warranty for it.

Sorry for the late reply guys. The bottom basket is just full of the pot scrubbies, the next two are setup the same: 2/3 full with bio-balls then filter pad media on top of that (It's pink on one side/white on the other. got it off ebay and it's cheap and works pretty good) I do recommend using 100% petroleum jelly to grease the sides of the baskets to make them easier to pull out during maintenance. I don't use any carbon in the filter (or I haven't needed to yet anyways) but I do have a large media bag that would fill up most of one of the trays if I ever needed to.

I found the scrubbies. However... when I got home with them I find that there is a sponge inside the scrubbie. Is that suppose to be there? Do I need to find some without the sponges?

No, you do not want the ones with sponges in them!!!

Sorry Coach, I've not heard if any of the SunSun parts are truly compatible with the Marineland filters? I know they look similar, but that's it.

I believe it's the sun sun 303. I actually spent the extra $10 on amazon and got the Aquatop CF 400 UV, the Aquatop branded version of the same thing, because in my research, people thought that the plastic for the spray bar and intake was thicker and higher quality.

I got my 302 hooked up yesterday. Had a lot of air issues. Can someone tell me if the water returning through the sprayer comes out fast or just runs out. Mine is just running out. Not much pressure. Still have more noise than anticipated. May be yet more air inside. Just trying to figure it out. Is it possible I could have to much media inside that is blocking water flow?

Don't have a 302 equivalent, so I can't address pressure issues. Rock the canister. If you have air in there, you'll hear it coming out. If you listen, you can hear if air is entering the canister. Until that stops, you're going to have air issues.

Reach out to their customer support. I know a lot of people have said they've had issues with customer service, but aside from delays on *my* end in the email correspondence (my work schedule precluded calling), I got timely responses that were helpful. In fact, during troubleshooting, turned out my UV bulb wasn't working, so they shipped one out to me, no charge.

I don't know about other canisters, but I'd imagine the only way to have too much media is to be squeezing it in. That just seems like a bad idea in general. Mine has 3 baskets. In the bottom, I left the included coarse filter and added another pad that I cut to shape/size. In the middle, I left the polishing pad on the bottom of the basket, and added ceramic (fluval biomax, a pound or liter or whatever the packaging holds) cylinders on top. Top basket I have a polishing pad, and a 100ml bag of purigen. I'm probably going to add another bag of purigen to that, because there's easily enough space for it.

As far as the quantity of flow, when I only used one section for the spray bar, aimed down the length of my tank, everything other than my BN, espeis, and RCS stayed as far away as they could. When I added the second section, the other fish ventured nearer, but still didn't seem to like it. now, I have it mounted on the long side of the tank, about the middle, pointed at an upward angle (if you look at it from the side closest to the canister, it's at about a 10:00 positioning) at the tank wall, and the fish roam the entire length of the tank again.

All that said, I have the one that's the next size up, and it's Aquatop branded, but it's apparently as different from the Sun Sun branding as a Plymouth Neon is from a Dodge Neon.

Did you ever get this resolved?

FWIW, I just eBayed a Sunsun 302 for $58.66, media included. I'll post back how it works out.

My 302 arrived today. I'm kind of surprised at the decent overall quality of the unit. Everything fits together nice and the quality of the Chinese plastics and components is a lot better than it was years ago. MUCH less bubble gum and paper mache. LOL. The wording on the box and instruction sheet is disturbingly horrible! :D. Even so, still 100% better than I would do trying to compose Chinglish. Well see how she runs when I get the 55 setup.

One potential mistake I made was paying the extra ~$9 for a 302 with the media included. For the extra ~$9, all you get is about a dozen plastic bio-balls, a bag of carbon and a big blue 'car washing' sponge for the bottom basket. Maybe it's worth the extra $ for someone just starting out with one? Maybe not. A basic 302 kit will come with a thin white filter pad for each basket and no additional media. A basic 302 can be had, sent to your door for ~$49 all in.

Yeah, I got mine through TruAqua (it's the Aquatop version) and was decidedly unimpressed with the "filter media included". The only upside in my case was it wasn't a matter of paying extra as it was the standard offering via their website. Like you said it's about 12 bio-balls and a carbon pack. Silly me, I saw "included" and thought it would actually be enough to, you know, set up the filter.
