My tanks

Love love love your tanks! Btw extra floating plant culls make sweet compost. Lots of nutrients!
I have to compost my water lettuce even with 9 tanks!
Good to know, we got some plants growing out in the garden that may appreciate them

Looks much better without the heater, all of your tanks look great. You know those tetras are artificially colored and that causes health problems right?

I know theyre genetically modified. I call them GMO fish. But at the very least theyre not injected and dyed.

My husband brought home 2 when i asked for more skirts to up our school. He brought home the glofish ones. I didnt like them before, but they grew on me.

I dont know which we will bring home when we get another. Ill probably stick to just a short fin one, but he gets to pick one out since technically the skirt tetras are "his"

Actually, its a good thing i swapped out heaters on my one 20g when i did. The old one burst on me. It was in my fry holding tank, no fish in just some snails. Gotta clean it all out, the poor things.

I dont wanna know what would have happened if i had this in my 20g with fish.

Tank looks great ! Love those roots sticking in. Sorry about those snails... the green/amber ones??
The problem with heaters is they typically fail in the on position. And a lot of fish don't need them the ambient room temperature is high enough in most houses.

It's not been a good day tank wise. Gotta redo all of Cheriko's tank. Found cyanobacteria taking hold of the floating plants. Given her tank is only 2.5 gallons, im just tearing it down, boiling all of the driftwood inside, rocks, sand, everything, cleaning it out, and redoing it. I will pull sponge from other tanks to insta-cycle it again.

I think the sponge filter isnt offering enough flow to the tank, combined with lack of nitrates due to the floating plants constantly eating it. Going to increase flow with a new filter.

I loooove the tank! And wow you dodged quite the bullet there  thank goodness it wasn’t with your fish. Do the snails seem okay?
I picked out what snails i could see and moved them. They were active as normal. But ramshorns and bladders are fine without heat. I just worry about any chemicals or metal leeching out from the heater.

No not my snails in my snail jar. They have no heater :)
My home temps are too cold without heaters unless i want to keep cold water fish lol my home stays 65 year round.

The heater was in a 5 gal bucket i had running to store livebearer fry to grow out. Somehow snails got in it from decor and took over it, but i let it be as they kept the filter in it keeping its cycle. But the heater in the bucket well... it kicked the bucket.

Needless to say ive placed an order for a new heater. New heater ill put in my 10g and ill move the preset little heater from the 10g to the bucket when the new heater comes in. If any fry are born before that time, they will have to tough it out in the parent tank lol

I tore down the 2.5g and sterilized it and re did it.

Tossed all of the plants in the tank. Not risking reintroducing cyano again. Not a problem as i have enough salvinia to fill a swimming pool at this point :P

I drained all the water, tossed the driftwood, boiled all of the rocks. Removed the sponge filter and left it to dry out completely and not to be reused again for a long while.

I put together a new filter using a bottle filled with media from my other tanks, including a new sponge taken from other tanks. So totally cycled media, but just new to this tank. Went with the bottle design for the air powered filter to increase surface agitation. Inserted air tube into the bottle, holes drilled into the lid of it to let air and water out, holes in the bottom of the bottle to suck water in. Crude finger drawing of this included.

Sand was rinsed with boiling water, rinsed with cooler water, added back. Tank was scrubbed with hot water as well.

New water added was boiled indian almond leaf water mixed with water taken from another established tank. Kept my tannins while also keeping some good water for stability.

Heater was scrubbed and reinstalled (black cord, since the mini heater is hidden).

Leaves and hornwort were added. Then a small and contained bit of new salvinia was added. I contained it using a loop of drinking straws to create a floating barrier. This way i get some floaty plants but not as much that it obstructs surface flow so i dont encounter this issue again.

Since i lost all established biofilm with sterilization, i had to move my nerite snail to another tank so he had food.

Tank is still a bit cloudy from the sand being stirred up with refilling, but its back up and running. Process took me about 1.5 hours.

Bonus photos of Cheriko. Her markings are already changing too. Her fins are turning black.20200420_095819.jpg20200420_095821.jpg
