Gonna need some filter-ation for that 55. Anyone have an extra filter going cheap?

The local Pet Supplies Plus has 12x36" UGFs in the Clearance section for 75% off....about $8. Not 48", but it'll work well enough. That with a reverse flow powerhead (Penguin 660R) would work nicely for the 4 small GFs. You could add a HOB filter and second powerhead later as $$ permit for extra capacity/redundancy.

Hang a 4' shop light over the top and you're good to go. CHEAP!

I'd sell ya mine, but its almost brand new, and plus shipping from canada to the states would prolly be more than I'd charge...

Looks like you got lucky with the fishys though!! Hope they're happy, and you just got a reason for another tank!!!!!

Get a pond, man. Shubunkins = Koi, AKA 3+ feet, and common goldies get almost 2 feet. If you take them back, take them to a LFS, not the !@#$% holes at WalMart!
While I agree that a pond is best for Common's, comets, shubunkins, etc... any long-bodied goldfish, I just wanted to clarify that shubunkins are not Koi. Shubunkins are merely calico common type goldfish. Shubunkins usually should grow to the 12"-15" range where pure common goldfish can grow to nearly 24".

I'm glad you are getting a 55G but realize that even it will not be large enough for the four or even one long-bodied goldfish as a permanent home. Work on finding a nice little pond for them so they each have a 100G of water volume and lots of swimming room. You will probably have to do weekly to twice weekly PWC's (25% partial water changes) on the 55G and constantly run chemical filtration (carbon changed every few weeks or Purigen or other advanced chemical filtration that can be cleaned as needed) to help with removal of hormone levels, etc.

Think about buying some Anacharis/Elodea and just leave it floating on the surface. It will get more light and CO2 from the air and grow faster so it will also help with sucking up the nitrogenous waste of the goldfish and increase the CO2 levels as well. Also, by letting it float, instead of planting it, it makes it harder for the goldfish to eat. They'll still pick at it but at least they can't rip it to shreds as quickly. You can normally get Anacharis cheap for around 50 cents a bundle at garden centers and some LFS.

Well I guess I dont understand how is it better buying the fish and slowly killing them yourself opposed to them dieing at walmart?

The responsible thing would be to donate them to someone who can care for them properly.

good sir Paul...

how about some constructive comments, eh?

She is going to put the goldies in a 55G tank once it is cycled in a week or two. For 4 1-2" goldies, this will be fine for a year or two til they outgrow it...plenty of time to find a pond or arrange for alternate living quarters.

I'm confident these fish will be treated better than 99.9% of anything Wallyworld sells.

Sir, if you had made a similar comment when I put 6 2" goldies in a 30G two years ago, it would have driven me off aquariacentral entirely.
(FYI, they get a 75G next week)

My dear darling paul, even though a 2 gallon bowl is WAY WAY too small for four goldfish, maybe you should go look at the tanks in walmart. There are thirty+ goldfish in each ten gallon tank, they don't feed them enough so they are starving to death, they don't get enough airation so they gasp at the surface for air... and here I am, telling you that I'm going to change their water everyday, provide them with plenty of food, and soon I'm putting them into a 55 gallon... and all you have to say is something negative? Why bother at all? I'm sure your mother told you, "If you can't say anything nice, STFU!"

Seriously though, :silly:
